Tonight the hubby and I went to see a musical. We had 4 tickets so we took Daughter #1 and Son #1. Now, this musical had been advertised as not suitable for children. OK, these two are 23 (in 3 weeks) and 17 --- definitely not children.
The musical was "Avenue Q". Everything started out great --- singing and laughing and puppets. What could be better?
Well let me just tell you that there's a fine line between puppets and porn. Really.
Stop laughing. If I could have willed the ground to open up and swallow me I would have. But no, I had the wonderful experience of sitting with two of my children and watching puppets simulate having sex --- all kinds of sex. Thankfully it was just one scene, and in the words of son #1, "It got less awkward with Act 2." ( It did have some catchy songs and the singing was awesome.)
Now, I knew that there would be mature subject matter -- I'm not completely out of touch. Well, I didn't think I was. And excuse me --- "not suitable for children'??!!!!! HELLO!!! Staying up late is not suitable for children. Running with scissors is not suitable for children (or anyone, for that matter). Sneaking the car out is not suitable for children (hello, little bro). Margaritas are not suitable for children! There are many, many, many things I would list as "not suitable for children". Puppets simulating sex is beyond that --- heck, it's not suitable for 40-something mothers of children!!
I think my eyeballs are scorched.

Yikes. Yeah, one of my roomies last year bought the soundtrack, but she had to delete a lot of the songs. I've heard some strange things about that show. But I do like the "It Sucks to Be Me" song. It seems fitting right now, as it's nearly 1AM and I'm still trying to finish homework. Of course, that's my fault, but still. That's why it sucka-sucka-sucka-sucka-sucka-suck- it suck to be me.
I just love reading your blog. It's like I am there. But hey, it might be closer to being there if we move back to OK!!!!!!
Daughter #2 -- I liked that song, too! In fact, I was really thinking about buying the soundtrack --- for about 45 minutes.
They sold black t-shirts with white letters that said, "It sucks to be me". I almost bought one for Son #3 but decided he'd never take it off!
Love you!!
xoxoxoxo
So are you going to tell me more about this move or not? You've always been planning on moving back. So ---- when?
I can't believe you took your kids to go see that! Hahaha.
Mom, I could've told you how awkward that would be. If only I had known.
I haven't seen it (and don't intend to, 'cause puppets are creepy enough when they're not having sex), but I've heard quite a bit about it.
Sorry you had to experience that.
Love you!
Well I wish I had asked! On, and I was thinking of son #2 for the shirt, not 3. Love you more!
I'm shocked!!!!!And you are supposed to be my parenting role model!
Well, look on the bright side atleast you didn't bring sons #2 & #3!!!!!LOL!!!!!
You're right, though it's difficult to see the bright side when your eyeballs are scorched!
