Fountain pens

This is the day we brought Daughter #1 home. Pretty much the first few minutes we were there. Wow. We had no idea. Nary a clue as to what God had in store. I guess that's a good thing.

Last night Son #1 and Daughter #1 made dinner for us. We had crab legs. This was a first in our family and it turned out very well. Son #1 did a great job with the crab.

Son #3 enjoyed the crab:

And buckle your seat belts ---- Son #2 enjoyed the crab!! And the roasted potatoes that Daughter #1 made!! Who says miracles don't happen any more?

Daughter #2 started a new teddy bear today. This is what it looked like this morning:

These are pictures of the one she finished last night:

Is that impressive or what? She knitted the entire thing!! I'm proud -- especially because of the reason she's doing this.

This is George in a bag -- just a couple of hours ago. I canNOT leave bags around this house! I put it down for a moment and then saw that he was totally inside it when I grabbed my camera. He was making his way out by the time I clicked.

And this is Colby and George in one of their favorite spots --- the "In" basket on my desk. They absolutely love to sit in there when I'm working in the study. Cats are strange.

And now, the explanation of tonight's title:
Jim collected fountain pens. You know, the kind with the ink cartridges that make a mess if you don't use them the right way? He loved these pens. Many people knew that and so he received them on special occasions. I even got him one at Harrod's in London one year when I was visiting my brother and his family (the year that I missed one of my children's birthdays for the first time -- also Daughter #1, and also a huge chapter in her book. Come on -- with 6 kids I was bound to miss something!).

Anyway, I digress (a lot lately). Jim collected these pens. Some are quite beautiful and unique. Well, tonight, for the first time, I got them out. He had two lovely pen boxes in which to store them. Most of them don't have ink cartridges in them, or the ones they do have them are empty. So I decided to replace a couple of them. As I was attempting to do this, I decided that I am very much like these fountain pens. I may look okay on the outside, even a little attractive on a very, very good day (too bad you can't count on those days), but on the inside I'm empty. Nothing comes out. And when something does comes out because a cartridge has been replaced, it's not smooth and clean. It's messy and now I have ink all over my hands. When emotion comes out of me it tends to be messy. My insides are either empty or sometimes clogged so nothing works the way it should. I never know what to expect -- emptiness or a blob of emotions that I can't control. You should all be very wary of me .... you may wind up with "ink" all over you, too, if you get too close.

OK, I leave for the airport in about 5 1/2 hours --- gag!!! Yes, a 5:30 a.m. flight. I'm not sure whether to just stay up or try to get a little sleep.
Anyway, as promised, I will leave you with a discussion question (thanks to NONE of you for sending in a suggestion!).
Let's see ...... what shall it be?
Since I am going to a beach I'll ask something about that.
Here goes:

Do you prefer a beach vacation or a ski vacation? I absolutely hate being cold so that's easy for me. I also don't particularly enjoy falling down. But I know there are plenty of you snow-lovers out there, so tell me.
And include your very favorite beach/ski resort to visit.

OK ..... discuss amongst yourselves. I shall be back on Sunday night (sooner if I have internet in Cabo).

Buenos noche y adios!

Hope you have an awesome time there! I am definitely a beach fan over skiing. I also am not a huge fan of cold though as long as it's warmish outside skiing is not so bad! I've only been twice. Fave beach resort - gosh good question. I love Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island in Australia! It's one of the first ecoresorts built in the world and gorgeous, and there are humpback whales in the bay and rainforest in the island middle but it's right on the beach and we saw dingos running and climbing into people's boats! It was really cool.

Awwww...that was sweet of them to cook! What handsome boys:)
Son #3's smile is contagious!
I have always loved fountain pens too. When I was a kid, I did calligraphy. I don't mind getting a little inky!

I do NOT like skiing. I prefer the sun and water ANY day to cold snow.
I despise being cold!

I have to say beach. I hate snow skiing. Hate it. I grew up in the north and had lots of opportunities to snow ski. I hated it. I don't like to be so cold that your nose runs and because you are so cold you can't feel it you end up with frozen snot around the edge of your nostrils. I don't like to fall down in any situation, especially one that leaves me wet. And cold. I love the beach, the water, the sun, and I am even growing to like the heat. I don't have a favorite resort though. I do love Maui. Not a resort but a great place to be if you are going to be on a beach.

Great teddy bear!!!very impressive K!!!!
Crab looks wonderful, I'm glad son #2 tried and liked it and the potatoes! It was very nice of D #1and S#1 to cook dinner.
my answer to the discussion question:
Beach!!!!I love the beach, it is my favorite place to be. I love the sound of the ocean, I love walking along the shore, collecting shells, building sand castles, swimming in the ocean...
I have many memories of beach vacations- one of my favorites would have to be Playa Del Carmen in 2004, we rented a house, right on the beach, with a pool and a cook (much cheaper than one might think- it was the same cost as renting a third row house, with no pool and no cook, in Galveston!amazing!) We were there for 8 days, it was beautiful. Wish I were there right now!
I also have some great memories of Galveston vacations and get-a-ways.

I hope and pray that you are able to enjoy your trip to Cabo- and that you are refreshed by it. Take some pictures!!! Love you, K

I love to go spring skiing but don't like to ski when it's very cold but spring skiing is great! As much as I love the clean, mountain air and the beautiful scenery while skiing, I would definitely choose beach vacations. What is interesting is my guys don't always enjoy beaching it. They get bored laying on the beach, reading. I could do it forever. I love Kauia and Bora Bora, Tahiti. I also love crab legs! They looked so good and cooked to perfection.
Praying for you to enjoy Cabo and fellowship with friends.

I love the beach also. We just got back from Captiva Island in Florida. Stayed at the South Seas Beach Resort and it was nice. The shelling is fantastic there. Very quiet island with beautiful sunsets! One of my favorite beaches was in Maui. I love to go snokeling right off the beach! I would love to go to Cabo someday also. I like spring skiing vacations because it is not sooo cold. It is a good vacation because we all can ski/board together. Great quality family bonding time!! The conversations on the ski lifts are quite interesting sometimes. Hope you have a wonderful time. Can't comment on the cat thing. (Cat Hater here) I just think they are too sneaky and you can't keep them or their hair off of the cabinets. Oops, wasn't suppose to comment. Love you! Jennifer

Ah the beach...picture a beach. (I stayed clean on that one) Honolulu Hawaii would be my most favorite beach. Haven't been to alot but what I have been to it takes the cake! Tried the skiing thing and HATED it!! So Beach! #3 looks just to dang cute in that picture. And it was really sweet of #1 and #1 to fix dinner. You do have some awsome kids. I can't wait until mine can do that!!! Love ya chick and I hope you have fun in Cabo!

I'll take any vacation, so long as my kids stay home--don't know if it's really a vacation if the kids are with you.

Not true, really. The beach is a great place for the kids, as long as they are seaworthy. One time Matt was afraid of jellyfish and wouldn't go in the water, but even then had fun playing on the sand. I love taking early morning walks on the beach (thus my reason to want to leave the kids somewhere else.) And, although I hate to be cold, I do enjoy a skiing vacation. There are lots of good runs in the Tahoe area, and any place with skiing in Colorado is beautiful. But hey, reading this blog, I'm ready for a vacation now. (Again, that could have something to do with wanting to get away from my children. Two days down...it's going to be a long summer.) susan

Beach for me, with a "beverage" in hand and a good book! I'll try to see you on Monday before we leave for Paris! Kate was very touched that you were at graduation to give her her diploma. We were all touched to see you up there! Come back bronzed and relaxed!!!! Cindy T.

Beach. The less amount of clothes on my body, the better. So far, I've liked Maui and Cancun. Hopefully I will be able to experience more in the future.

I used to think that my sister and I had different parents because she is a mountian girl (snow caving, ice climbing, skiing, etc.). However, I have changed my mind that since my brother is into all of that too; I am the odd man out. The good news is that my husband and kids love the sand and water too.

Enjoy Cabo!

Having never experienced a ski vacation, I cannot make an educated decision.

I will say that I generally enjoy the beach (and now that I'm 21 I'll be enjoying it even more. Hah! Jk.)

Love and miss you! Hope you're having a good time!!

Love the knitted bear! Adorable. I love both types of vacations, how about 1 week in the winter to ski and snowmobile and the next week basking in the sun on a tropical beach. Cheryl
