San Diego Pics ....

Today was a good day.
Who would've thunk?

Especially because I felt that last night I lost a friend.
I was in pain and a bit of shock.
As I've written before, some friends cannot deal with the "after" me ..... they want the "before" me and she's not coming back.
And I can no longer deal with the pain of this expectation or the pain that I feel because I am somehow disappointing them and not acting the way they think I should be acting. They .... who still have their husbands and have no earthly idea what I'm going through.

Because .... in spite of what some people may think, and in spite of the waves that come and go,
I think ..... overall ..... I'm doing pretty damned well for someone who only has half a heart.

I feel mostly blessed.
I feel very loved.
I have a wonderful, supportive family.
I don't cry every day.
Not every day.
I laugh at least once a day .... most times several.
I am playing tennis when I can.
I have a job that I love, and work with people whom I love.
I'm still recovering from major surgery 5 months ago that set my grieving on the back burner.

And I went to San Diego ..... which is freakin' huge.

Yes, I miss Jim.
Sometimes more than I can stand.
Yes, I sometimes wish I could join him.
But I haven't.
And that, my friends (or not) is NORMAL!!

I am healing the best way I can .... the only way I know how to ..... since I've never done this before.
Fortunately I have more friends and family who know this than who doubt it. I am still blessed.

I love my friends. Very, very much. They have been there for me during the worst moments of my life. I can never repay them for the love they have shown me, for the hours they worked tirelessly for me, for the time they spent with me.
They have all blessed me in more ways than I can list.
But I cannot be all or who some of them need me to be.
And I have to stop trying.

So last night I felt horrible .... but today I realized that I can not control what people think and I need to let go of that.
And so I did.
And felt much relief this morning.

And went to work and had a busy, but good day.

I have now downloaded my San Diego pictures and will share them with you, Peeps.

This is my brother-in-law, J, with the new golf clubs he just got for S (I have never seen such TINY clubs!):

This is my adorable niece, S:

This is me, reliving my past days of motherhood ..... having just braided S's hair:

Our first day at the beach:

S, in the back row, at her day camp's "Lion King" program:

Our 2nd trip to the beach:

These are now from the Conference. This is T, who is in my Circle:

This is R, who is also in my Circle:

These are other women/widow bloggers:

Well, except for Matt ..... who is obviously not a woman, but who is a blogger:

The first morning after my shower I noticed this sign, which talked about how "we" care about helping the environment, by hanging up our towels:

And then I looked down (right beneath the sign) and thought, "I guess we don't." (Sorry, but I thought this was hilarious):

This was a wall of Tribute Tiles/Photos of the spouses who have died:

My favorite picture of Jim:

Spending some time at the lovely pool:

Next to some lovely yachts:

The view from our room of San Diego:

T, and R and T at the Saturday night dinner:

T and the other women at our table:

R, is who also in my Circle:

Matt, who looked quite nice Saturday night!

This was the restaurant where "Top Gun" was filmed (the restaurant scene, anyway). Kind of cool ..... we had a very good lunch there the last day:
So there you go. My trip to San Diego. I'm wondering if you noticed one thing in common with all of the pictures from the Conference? Like ...... ummmmmm .... the smiles?
Pretty strange, huh? Not what you would expect from a Widow's Conference, is it?
But there were a lot of smiles. Too many to count.
And just as many laughs.

So yes, in spite of the waves, in spite of the days of feeling paralyzed, in spite of the floods of tears I have, and continue, to cry ....... I am healing. Along with all of the people who went to this Conference.

One day at a time.
One breath at a time.

One Peep at a time.

P.S. Here is Jennifer's latest post from tonight. She, her husband and baby Stellan are heading to Boston soon, by air ambulance, for another procedure to save Stellan's heart. Please continue praying for them, Peeps. You're the best prayers I know.

I have such memories of your french braids! Never could accomplish much myself. And your laughter Janine. I can actually HEAR it still. And it's always been right below the surface so it can pop out with the slightly push. I'm glad you are having it occasionally....I'm so thankful for the friends that touch you everyday. I think our circle gets smaller when we have a trauma, but TIGHTER. May your circle hold you tight. Love.

J,
I started reading your blog a year and a half ago because I wanted to know more about a person (and fellow Kingwood-ite...is that a word???) that a good friend of mine loved and was broken-hearted for. My heart too broke for you and your family...even though I have never met you.

I keep reading because you write without a mask!!! I LOVE the honesty of your blog. I LOVE how real you are when you write. It is what it is, you feel how you feel, and you are who you are TODAY and you don't apologize for it.

You make it feel safe & OK to go mask-less sometimes (I'm not as evolved as you are so I'm not ready to discard my collection entirely!!!) I hope that sometime that I find myself back visiting Kingwood that we could meet IRL (as MckMama says!!!)...we could meet with AP now that she's back in the Houston area if that would be more comfortable!

Regardless of that...THANK YOU for your blog!!!

I don't know the "before" Janine,(and I don't really know you per say) but I do know that when you are my friend, you are a friend through ANYTHING! I pray that you continue to heal, the way you need to, and I also pray that you continue to have a good support system around you always. I am so happy that you had a good day! I pray that you have more good days!

LG,
I cannot tell you how much your words of encouragement have meant over the past year and a half. And the fact that you are such a good friend of A's (whom I'm delighted is moving back to the area!) means you are very special. I would love to meet you IRL any time, with or without A. Just let me know when you'll be around!!!
Thanks for reading and commenting and staying.

Tressa,
Thank you for your encouragement and your prayers.
There have been, and most likely will continue to be, times when I cannot pray and so I count on the prayers of you and the rest of my readers. It means more than I can say.
You are a good friend. And that's a blessing.

You ARE doing not just "pretty damn well", but exceptionally well!! You are encouraging, inspiring and giving hope to others who are on this path with you. And that, my friend, is truly a gift you give to many. It is hard for those of us who have been blessed to call you friend in the "before" because we don't know how to relate to your new experiences and we want to keep "relating" in our "before" ways. For some, that means wanting the relationship to be more about them than about you. Which may have been the dynamics all along. Just a guess.

Thank you Anon ..... my "before" and "after" friend. I think you may be right. I know this has been difficult for all of you .... my wonderful "before" friends. But I so appreciate those of you who continue to walk beside me, growing and learning with me. None of us knows what we're doing, but I think the point is to keep walking .... to keep following God and putting one foot in front of the other as best we can. I think the problems come when we refuse to move out of our "comfort zone", for fear of what, or who, may come next. As for me, I have no more comfort zone, so it's all new to me. Which makes the friends who keep abreast with me, all the more priceless. I know it's hard work, but I love and appreciate you for being here.

Glad you're realizing that it's not your fault that others think you should be healing quicker, or are disappointed that you've changed. As you said, many of us who are praying for you can't fully understand what you're going through, but yes, I think you're coming along quite nicely. :)

Praying for Stellan, too!!!

Janine, you are doing wonderfully, and I'm glad you're surrounding yourself with people who are healthy for you to be around.
Your mention of not having a comfort zone anymore hit home with me. I think that is EXACTLY why it's so easy for me to pack up and leave my home, my life, and start again on unfamiliar territory with no fear. Thinking of you. (Great pics, too!)

Janine,
I so remember the "before" you especially recently when you wrote about Jim's eye accident and thinking back to that time in your lives. You were so strong through that time and Jim was so proud of you and your strength.
Now I am looking at your strength again and what a dark place you were in this time LAST month. This has been a tough year especially with your surgery and health issues but you continue to persevere. I see God using you and your life to reach so many people suffering and hurting. And when anyone examines your life and your struggles and your victory over them, they see God. You are a great messenger for him. And to him be the glory!
Love you always.

Janine, since I do not know the "before" you, I have no point of reference. I do have an idea of the "now" you and I believe that you are strong in Him and from reading your blog for the last year and a half...you have grown so much and come so far. You are truly an inspiration to anyone who reads your blog whether they are in similar shoes or not. You are strong and I know that it is not in youself..for none of us are strong by ourselves..only thru Him and with Him. I know this just from daily life...my sister once told me that we were so much stronger than our mother and I told her, "no, it's not me, it's the Jesus in me that is strong". She is without Jesus and she is a sad mess. Jesus is the only answer and you know that and show us that. You grow wiser by the day and even by the hour. Keep on putting one foot in front of the other. He will see you thru. Blessings and hugs and prayers..Mary Lou

You were in a "safe" place where all of you could smile without the masks or pretending, knowing, though, the pain is still real but noone had to be ashamed of it.

You are healing, inch by inch, step by step and that you should smile about!

Blessings,

What a good thing it is to have this online circle of friends through your blog. As I read your posts, their comments, & your reponses I am struck by the love of Christ which permeates the conversations.
