Auf Wiedersehen ....

...... meine Peeps

Yes, of course I know that the picture is backwards, but I didn't have time to find a mirror and then try to take it again and I used the camera in my computer.
So sue me.
Or just chuckle ..... which might be a bit easier.

So I'm heading to the airport in an hour or so.
We fly from here to Paris and then from Paris to Berlin.
Or so I think.
I actually don't know for sure ..... I just know where to show up and to bring my ticket and passport.
That's all I need to know.
Maybe I should've gone into the CIA or the military.
I'm good with being on a "need to know basis".

I couldn't leave you without posing a question for you all to discuss while I'm away.
And hopefully you all will chime in, because I WILL be checking regularly!

So here it is ..... it will be easier for some of you.
If you've been to Germany .... what are some of the "must haves" that I should shop for?
If you haven't been to Germany, then do some homework and google it and then tell me what you found.
And please don't say a cuckoo clock.
I think I would only get one of those for someone I highly dislike.
Hmmmmm ..... I may have to give that one some thought.

OK, there you go.
Discuss amongst yourselves ......

Happy Tuesday, Peeps.
Or .... as they say in the Mother country .... glücklich Dienstag, Peeps.
:)

Look around for all year Christmas shops. The link is to one a lot of people recommend in Berlin. The wooden carved things are so beautiful, and well worth hunting for. Have a great time!

Gute Fahrt!

I was born there and love so much about it. I collect 'smokers' which are wooden figures in the folk art style. They burn incense although I do not use them for that purpose. Also, German crystal is wonderful.

Also, you must visit a kitchen store. Lots of fun and inexpensive items. And their 'tischdecken' (table linens) are the best I have found. And chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. Did I mention their chocolate also come filled with licqueur? Yum!

And do try the traditional "kaffee kuechen" in the afternoon. Not to be missed. And pretzels and bier or Rhine wine are just wonderful

Oh my... I am out of control. No matter, you will have a lovely time. The German people are warm and very hospitable with a wonderful sense of humour. Enjoy!

Tschuss!

I went to Europe on a choir concert trip when I was a teenager. When we were in Germany I saw a real Bavarian dirndl dresses in the window of a dress shop, and I just had to have it. I spent over half of my spending money that I brought for the entire trip, but never once regretted it. I wore it to school and all my friends went crazy over it! But, as I said, that was when I was a teen. I would probably buy that darned cuckoo clock if I went now! :)

I second the Erstgebirge things.

We love having a Pyramiden for Christmas centrepiece. IT's a big tower, with candles you light, and the heat from teh candles turns a propeller which turns a tower with little figurines.

Also pottery/porcelaine things which you put an incense stick inside, and then smoke comes out of the chimney

Also liebkuchen pfeffernusses - little gingerbread cookies are yum.

And chocolate!

loved the chocolate, had a bottle of wine while boating down the Rhine, and "lemon wasser" i think they called it, which was beer and lemonade...very good. the biggest thing i took home from germany, though, was a cold, which lasted about 2-3 weeks after i got back home, so i suggest that is NOT the souvenir you want.

I am an "experience shopper". In every little town we tried to take in the local churches/cathedrals and at least one local beer (or more) in a pub. As far as I'm concerned, forget the item-shopping. The people you will meet on those 2 excursions will change your life!
