I am back and thoroughly exhausted. I've been up since 9 p.m. Friday night, Texas time. I slept some on the plane, but never more than an hour at a time. The fight from Nairobi to Amsterdam was interesting. A French couple sat behind 3 of us. They evidently got very angry when we had the audacity to recline our seats. They spent the next NINE hours banging on our seats, pushing them forward really hard and pulling them back hard. I know enough French to have told them what I thought of them (and I was sorely tempted to many, many times) but decided that probably wouldn't be the best way to show the love of Christ. sigh
I decided to just completely ignore them -- I was too exhausted to get into a fight anyway. The lady next to me (a member of our group) finally talked to one of the flight attendants. That didn't seem to bother the French guy at all --- he did it right in front of the attendant, who basically did nothing.
I will refrain from drawing any comparisons to this couple and the reputation that their countrymen have --- you can make your own generalizations.
The flight from Amsterdam (where it was freezing!!) was much smoother, though longer at 10 1/2 hours. I met several interesting people, including a Romanian woman in her 70's who was going to Texas to visit her granddaughter -- her first trip to America. She knew a few English words and the friend she was traveling with could speak French, but not a word of English. When it came time to fill out the cards for customs they were at a complete loss. Thankfully, God gave me a lot of recall of French (nice words, not the ones you use to tell people off) and I was able to help them. The Romanian woman gave me a big hug and kissed me on both cheeks. I wish I could have had more time to get to know her. I bet she's a wonderful grandma.
My terrific husband and boys waited at the airport for well over an hour for me to arrive and get through customs. It was so great to see them and hug them!
I have downloaded my pictures and will try to get some of them posted this week. At the moment all of my energy is going towards trying to stay awake as long as possible so that I can get back on Central time easier. Much easier said than done.
Thanks for all of your prayers and support -- it was an awesome trip. One I hope to make again.
