And yet .... we continue to look for them. We look for them in places that we do not, can not, see them. But we long to see them.
We long for them because ..... well, because we feel lost without them. We want to be told what to do, where to go next, what choice to make.
I think this is one of those "ah-ha" things ..... we like to think that we're so independent, so able to cope with whatever comes our way ..... we are quick to dismiss offers of help because that might make us look weak ...... are we not? But ..... the reality of it is .... we want, we need ..... direction ....
.... signs.
Many of my friends know that the condition of my fingernails are a sign of my mental/emotional condition.
For the past several years my nails have looked pretty good because I went in for manicures on a regular basis.
Then .... last December hit. And my emotions, and my nails, spiraled down and down and down.
As the days of December came, my nails went. I literally chewed them off .... one day at a time.
I guess that some part of me thought that I'd go back in and get them taken care of once the "holidays" were over.
The best laid plans .......
Then I found out I had a tumor ...... so the nails continued to show my internal feelings. And boy, were they ugly!
But my emotions? My internal, secret feelings?
I wish I could say that they match my nails ..... but they don't. In fact, I almost cancelled this appointment today (I made it last week).
But then I thought ..... maybe, just maybe, if I go in and get my nails done ...... my emotions will follow.
Hmmmmmmmmm ........ how's that working for me?
I'll have to keep you posted.
But I guess the theory of that "sign" might be busted.
I hope not.
It's been a difficult week.
It started off OK. I can't recall the exact moment it started going south ....... wait ..... yes I can!! (It really is true that you can recall things better as you write about them!). I bet you could have all told me when it was ...... right?
That phone message on Tuesday.
Hmmmmmm ..... I thought I had gotten over that, but maybe not.
No ..... I think I did get mostly over that ..... with the help of Tammy.
But now I think that the physical part of me is starting to really affect the emotional part of me.
My hip hurts. No ..... that's really an understatement.
My hip, my leg, my entire left side from my thigh to my waist .... and behind ..... is killing me.
And it's making me very, very tired.
It always gets worse as the day goes on so that by nightfall .... I am a mess.
I feel like such a wimp. This is ridiculous. After all, there are so many people out there who suffer severe pain every day of their lives ..... and I'm letting this get to me. I wish I could stop it, but I really don't know how. I keep trying to think "good thoughts", keep trying to re-direct my thoughts, my activities (as limited as they are), but the pain just gets in the way.
I have been floored by this entire experience. It was not what I expected.
Not. At. All.
And I have received no direction from the medical world on how long this will last; how long I'll have pain; how long I won't be able to lead my "normal" life. And that makes me angry.
How long does it take a muscle that's been literally sliced in two, and then dug in to, to heal?
How long does one feel the pain from that healing muscle?
How long will it hurt to just ride in a car?
How long will this go on? Could I have a sign?
Haven't seen a sign.
Haven't seen a sign as to the "why" of this, either.
What a complete waste of time "whys" are. I could ask them all day .... knowing I'll never get an answer, but yet I ask them anyway.
Such a waste.
But ... why? Why can't Jim's death just be enough? Why can't I just grieve? Why?
Why must there always be something "waiting in the wings"?
Makes me a little afraid for this hip to heal and stop hurting ...... because .... what's next?
Such. A. Waste.
And that silence ..... that lack of a sign ..... makes me angry.
So yes, today .... this week .... I am a little angry at God.
I'd like a break.
It wouldn't have to be a long break, really. Just a month would be nice. A month when everything runs smoothly, everyone stays healthy .... and I feel good and can sleep and live.
Just. One. Month.
Too much to ask?
It would appear so.
But there ya go.
I feel ..... I write.
I write .... you read.
You must get very weary of reading.
I know I get very weary of feeling.
Very, very weary.
Of. Feeling.
But, just so that I can leave you with a smile .... which I love to do ..... here is a video of Gabby out by the pool today. Son #2 was in the pool, splashing her. She, being the incredibly brilliant dog that she is (not) tried to "catch" the water in her mouth ..... and then seemed to wonder where it went and looked for it around her.
I never said she was smart.
And, just to prove to all of my friends and family who need proof that I am grieving "normally" (whatever the hell that is) ....... click here and here.
And then take the time to let me know that you read it ..... and maybe you "get it" a bit better than you did before.
Please.

Janine,
We never get tired of reading. You have so many loyal blog readers who feel privledged to read and "feel" your thoughts and who keep the hope alive that you WILL have brighter days ahead! Praying that your hip pain will SOON be a thing of the past!
Wow! I read them both and it makes me happy to know that hopefully one day you can say your Okay. I knew you were greiving normally if there is really a normal way to greive. I love you so much and agree with Anon. We love reading, all of us or we wouldn't come back day after day, some of us several times a day to see if just maybe you have posted something else. Oh my dear sister...oh how I miss you, and look forward to our next visit, which if I have to I will come down there with the kids this summer. I need my sister fix! Love Love Love you!
Good evening my darling daughter.
What profound examples of the pain of grieving. I really didn't need to read those to "get it", though. For some reason I've "gotten it" from day one. I'm not sure why. Just know that I understand your not wanting to be here. Or anywhere Jim isn't. I also know there's nothing I can do to help you through this. But I'm here in case I'm needed.
Your nails are looking great! Hopefully that will lift your spirits a tad.
And Gabby is such a hoot! She's so funny. And her sister is definitely as dippy as she is. What a couple of doofus dogs. But soooo loveable!
I hope your hip feels better soon. I love you very much.
I never get weary reading, though my heart aches for the pain you suffer. The words and the way the are expressed are so vivid.
I hope your pain is at least eased soon, so that you can start to lead the life you are accustomed to once again. It's hard when you're under such limitations.
My thoughts are with you!
A friend of mine cut her shin on the license plate of her car, and had to get stitches. It was a deep gash. It took her at least 3 mo to completely heal. She had a lot of pain and was very frustrated w/the docs and with how slow it was in healing. She also had anemia develop so that may have slowed healing but deep gashes can take a while. Sorry that's not better news... be patient with yourself. :) You are loved!!
I too, read them both. I have always known that one day, you will feel "normal" again. (Okay, well, I do realize that you were never actually "normal",{grin} but I know that someday you will feel okay...and then someday you will be able to say, "I'm great!", and mean it.)
I have to tell you, my dear sister, that I never, ever get tired of reading this blog. I am in fact, very thankful for it. I feel like it has given me the chance to know you and appreciate you in a way that I never would have had. I love you so much.
Lis
P.S.
REAL bright dog ya' got there!!! ;)
Dear J,
I read both articles, but I didn't really need that to validate the feelings you have. They have always seemed "normal" to me.
As for your hip, just trust. You are a healthy, strong, active person and although recovery seems slow, trust that the recovery will be complete. It took me six weeks after my c-section with H2 to feel like I had most of my strength back and that had to be a MUCH easier recovery because the incision wasn't at a joint and muscle wasn't cut away. That weird feeling along the scar took longer to go away (I want to say like a year), but it did. It was so weird to seem to have lost feeling there, and yet the scar could be so easily irritated. You'll get there, I know you will!
Love you,
AEW
Thanks for the updated look of Gabby. I've been curious.
I too, wait for the day you can say 'okay'. There is a reason why they refer to a death of someone near and dear as a life changing event. Not only will you never be the same, your children have also been put on a different path.
I agree with AEW's first paragraph.
I read the articles, and like the others that posted before me, I also did not *need* to read them to know.
They were very good articles, Im glad you shared them. Gabby, as always, is a hoot! Love you, K
I just returned from a visit with my mom and caught up on your blog. I laughed and cried and I grieved. My heart aches for you, the other 2 ladies who wrote those amazing pieces and the many others out there. It made me realize that life is so precious and all of us need to tell our spouses and children and parents and friends every day how much we love them and to never take them for granted.
I know you did this with Jim and that he felt SO loved by his precious, beautiful wife everyday of his life.
I love you very much.
Thanks for sharing those articles but I too got it before I read them. My mother grieved for my daddy from the day he died till she joined him...27 years later. She did enjoy life and my children but there was always such a saddness in her eyes. There is no such thing as normal....normal is whatever works for you. I've lived long enough to understand that. You write so well and show your heart so well, you are helping alot of us out here who have yet to go thru what you have already gone thru. Praying that the pain in your hip subsides some really soon and then goes away altogether. Blessings...praying.
I also read the other two blogs and I read yours everyday--sometimes stopping in twice a day just to see if you have left another "life learning" tidbit for me.
Everything takes time and that times seems so long. Sometimes life just "sucks" and that's about all you can say about it. Knowing that you aren't the only widow in this world really doesn't help, because...you are the only widow in your house--in your space. Time may heal the wound in your hip, but the wound in your heart may never heal--scab over a little, but never heal in the depths of your heart. It just is as it is and sucks...big time!
I never tire of reading your blog--you are a beautiful writer..you have such a way of putting your thoughts into print. Love you...
Hello there! I've been reading your blog for awhile now, and really enjoy your very "real" way of writing (reminds me of myself!). I'm so sorry about the loss of your husband, and for everything else you've had to endure. I can relate to your feelings about wondering how long it will take to heal. Almost seven weeks ago I had a fall that resulted in a serious knee injury. I never expected that I would still be in pain, still not be able to walk normally, still have so much road ahead of me after seven weeks. It has taken it's toll on every aspect of my life. Prior to that, my mom had a rare complication that resulted in her needing a bowel reconstruction (she almost died), my sister was diagnosed with cancer, a close friend's son died....and the list goes on. People around me always comment on my crazy life and how "things always seem to happen to me". I've asked God "why" so many times, and all I get is silence. My blog has at least given me an outlet, as it seems you have found with yours. I'm still looking for my sign as well, and hoping for a long moment of peace. I will pray that you can get yours - you deserve it!
I had read one of the postings, "How ARE you?" but the other was a first-time-read for me. When someone walks in our moccasions, then they will realize that there is no "normal" pace for grieving, for grief.
And I also know from first-hand experience, how surgical recovery can knock you for a loop. Particularly when someone has been as active as you. In truth, the healing will be so gradual that you may simply realize that it doesn't hurt anymore, when you perform such-and-such an activity. I hope this occurs sooner rather than later.
Oh - and God? So many of us would love to give this woman ONE MONTH of "smooth sailing." We have all heard that saying about not giving someone anymore than they can bear. But - she needs a break. And God? Thank you for listening.
{{Hugs}}
J,
Your writing is such a great opportunity to teach those of us who have not been in a situation such as yours. I am learning every time I read your blog. Thank you so much for teaching me the very, very, very delicate art of communicating with someone who has experienced a huge loss. I have been so inept in a close relationship where the other has experienced loss and I have felt so helpless as I fumbled my way through the months afterwards. I felt I failed as a friend. I feel like you have equipped me with knowledge of how to affectively approach these types of situations in the future. You are a blessing in so many ways - what you do with your blog, what you do at the church, and what you share with your life. God is using you and your experience for the greater good! Hugs!!!
