...... so Son #1 leaves for school tomorrow. Daughter #1 is here until next Sunday so we'll have to come up with some fun things to do.
I have my next 4 month MRI this week .... on Tuesday, to check my hip. I then go to see the surgeon on Wednesday morning to go over the results.
So .... big week.
I'm not expecting any changes or anything .... and am not really worried about it .... just mainly wish this wasn't a part of my life.
But .... it is and so I just take it one day at a time.
The two youngest sons start school tomorrow. I'm glad. They both need to be into a schedule and back into "real life". I just pray that they both, but especially Son #2, get teachers that are perfect for them and that he keeps up the good work and attitude. I'm finding myself feeling a bit stressed at the thought of him and his classes .... but I need to let it go and trust that God is in control.
Which, of course, is easier said than done when your husband dies while you're trusting God to be in control and not let that happen.
Blunt .... yes.
Honest .... yes.
Trusting .... not so much .... yet.
Today was another quiet day. Went to church with the 3 boys, came home and watched "The Soloist" with D #1 and Son #1 .... it was good.
Then I took a two hour nap and then went to hang out with A & M tonight, for the first time in a week. It was nice .... and some time that I needed more than I knew.
Basically, it's been a good few days. I think the change in meds has finally kicked in, thankfully (or at least I hope so!). I also think that the changes in my life have kicked in .... letting some things go, while taking on more things at work and taking on new relationships and responsibilities.
I'm struggling with tennis and the role it will have in my life this fall. I didn't play at all this past week, by choice, because I wanted to give my hip a full break.
My work schedule will be busier this fall, which won't leave a lot of time for tennis, so I'm not sure where it will fit in. Funny thing is, my Mondays are still free to be on a team, but yet I'm not on any team. Ironic.
So I guess we'll see if I keep playing. And if I do ... when I will.
I'm trying really hard to come up with something to entertain all of you .... and am drawing a blank.
Son #3 has been undergoing football practice for the past few weeks .... and has suddenly developed a hatred for the sport, which he tried to pass off as a life-long hatred.
I did not buy into that. He loved football last year. But alas, he is now in the high school program, where things are kicked up a notch or twenty. And right now, they (the coaches) are trying to get as many guys to quit as possible. And sadly, Son #3 is considering quitting. So we'll see what the next week holds. I don't want him to be miserable, and I've heard a lot of negative things about the football program (we do live in Texas, afterall) and yet I don't want him to quit, either .... when it might turn out to be something he really enjoys if he gives it time.
Although I have to admit to you, my Peeps ...... tonight I heard that the program is very political and that whether your son plays depends upon how much you volunteer as a football mom.
I have to tell you, Peeps ...... between you and me ..... if that's what his football career is dependent upon ..... he's totally screwed.
I'm sorry, but by the time child #6 passes through school ..... I don't have as much motivation (or desire) to help out so that he can perform a couple of plays one night a week. I hate the political stuff and just don't have the energy to perform. So am I giving him less of a chance that D#1 had .... or even S#1? I'm not sure. All I know is that my life has changed so much in the past 20 months that I don't give 2 flips if he plays or not .... if it's dependent upon me and what I have to give. That just makes me want to go off on someone.
Texas football or not ..... that sucks.
So there you go ..... a little entertainment AND a topic for discussion. What are your thoughts? You all live all over the globe .... would we be "better" parents if we played the "game" so that our children could make the team, or the squad, or the play, or whatever? Should we play along so that they can have the full "high school experience"? Am I being selfish because I refuse to play along with what I consider to be crap? And in doing so, am I cheating my youngest child? Am I just being selfish with my time?
Give me your thoughts, Peeps .... please. I want to know what you think.
Until tomorrow ......

When it comes to any activity that our children pursue (sports, music, art, etc), they ultimately will have to stand on their own. That's part of their maturation. Given all the cirsumstances of his life, it seems right that son #3 does not have a mother who is trying to play politics for his benefit. Encouraging him to stick it out seems good. Finally he will make his choice.
You sound like a very healthy mom!
JB (I never excelled at sports or music or art).
I'm not to the stage of having to deal with this yet, but as my personality, I'm not 'into' organized sports as a whole, and in my view, kids should be old enough to make a commitment when they start sports, and then follow through with it on their own. Which obviously he is. I would let him make his own choice, and if he ends up regretting quitting, maybe he can find a non-school league, or try to join the team next year. But of course I've been a mom for 20 mos, so you know, that's what my advice is worth. :) Just don't beat yourself up over your lack of involvement, if you want to call it that -you have lots of other priorities & there's nothing wrong with that!
I am 100% with you Janine! I also refuse to play that game and have told my kids that they are 100% responsible for making or not making the team! They have to make it on their own talents or find another activity. I really RESENT that a parents involvement has ANYTHING to do with whether a child makes a team or not. It is ridiculous!!!
Another vote for you, Janine. Children need to learn to succeed or fail on their own without mom looking over their shoulder or "playing politics." Whether or not he plays football should be his decision...if he truly doesn't enjoy it, why play? There are so many other things he can get involved in if he likes. And if he chooses not to play, that's one LESS thing you have to put on your calendar! ;) Hugs and prayers for you!
Your position is a good one, volunteer to get involved if you love football and want to be involved. Not to help your son get play time or a better position. I do not think any level of involvment on your part will help #3 one way or another. I have sons who have gone through this program and have found that there are just too many athletes, not enough positions. Even though I may feel my son deserves this or that due to his hard work and dedication there are 75 other parents on our team who feel the same way.
The coaches make decisions based on winning games- that is their goal (often times unobtainable goal, but a goal none the less)its their job. Coaches are fired for loosing seasons, they don't want to loose, they are going to play the athletes who they think are the best for the job. And, they try to listen to all the parents who have concerns and feel little billy or tommy are being treated unfairly...Maybe they are? but that is life. Its not a bad lesson to learn. There is nothing wrong with him sticking it out for the year since he made a commitment to it. He may find out he really does like it. Don't buy into the volunteer/politics excuse. If he sees that you are concerned about it or reads that you are, he will believe it too and then he will not want to try anymore.
Just remember, every parent thinks their child is the best (and rightly so, they are the best to us) maybe the parents who have voiced their complaint about this teams politics have sons who did not get to play much? not an uncommon complaint in a 5A school with 80 boys on Varsity FB, but maybe they didnt play much because there was someone on the team who was simply better than them and their parents could not see that?
Just a thought.
