...... for my three daughters.
It should've been on that show that used to be on (it could still be on for all I know, I never really saw it, just heard the title), called "The Week That Was".
It was actually the week that I was in S. Carolina, preparing for, and attending, Camp Widow East.
I got three phone calls while I was there.
And each one made me very proud and very happy for one of my daughters.
By the time I received the third call I felt like I was floating on a cloud.
Because, well ...... just because it's about damn time, you know?
I think the first call came from Daughter #3.
As I've mentioned before, she teaches deaf students in the Waco school district. She's finishing up year 3 right now. She's also been attending grad school at Gallaudet, the well-known university in D.C. for deaf students (mostly). She's working on her masters in a program that's for educators. They attend classes on campus during 3 summers, and do the work on line during the school years while they're teaching.
Before they graduate they're required to complete an internship in counseling at a school.
While we were in NY during spring break, Daughter #3 interviewed with a school for deaf students in Queens. The principal liked her so much she offered her the job that day.
But D3 had one more interview to do before she could decide.
The week of Camp Widow she called me to tell me that she'd decided to go with the school in Queens.
Which means that, starting in August, she will be my room mate. Whoop!!
The next call came from Daughter #1. She was in NY that week, attending some kind of theatre workshop/festival/I'm not sure what to call it, where she was honored by having a play she had translated from French into English chosen for this week. D1 translated a play by a French playwright .... a woman who lives in France and who's play D1 liked.
Because her translation was chosen, the playwright and D1 were brought to NY to have the play read/performed during the week of the workshop/festival/whatever.
Out of all of the translated plays submitted, two were chosen. And hers was one of the two.
So that was pretty cool all by itself.
But that wasn't the reason I got the phone call.
It seems that a NY theatre was interested in interviewing D1 for a job. So she went to that interview that week.
She called me to tell me how it went. And though she didn't feel hugely positive about the experience, they called her 2-3 days later to offer her the job. Whoop!!
Which means that, starting one week from today ...... she will be my room mate.
I have to stop here and say something.
This was not really how I pictured this whole "NY thing" going.
Not at all.
But I've been giving it some thought and have come to this conclusion:
While this may not be how I saw things playing out up there (at all), I'm looking forward to it.
It would feel differently if the two of them were moving back "home" ...... back here in Texas, into the home in which they grew up.
But we're going to be living in NY. In an apartment that's new to them, and very, very different from the place where they grew up.
They both love NY (well of course they do!) and so hopefully we'll be able to explore the city together and take in the museums, concerts, plays, etc. together.
Both jobs are temporary. Daughter #3 has hers for the fall semester and then she'll graduate in December.
D#1 has hers for a year or so. And then hopefully, she'll move up the ladder to another theatre.
It should be a very interesting semester/year.
And I'm looking forward to it. Very much.
And then there's Daughter #2.
She called me at the end of the week while I was on the East coast.
And she had wonderful news.
No, she's not moving to NY (although she could if she wanted).
She took the test that morning to get her license as a professional, and very licensed, social worker. And she not only passed said test, she aced it.
Double whoop!!!
She graduates with her masters in Social Work in 2 weeks.
I have no idea where she'll live.
But I hope she loves it.
So there you go.
A banner week indeed, for the daughters.
I'm proud of each of them.
They've gone through a lot these past 5 years.
And yet they've each accomplished a lot, too.
In spite of these past 5 years.
Or maybe because of them.
All I know for sure is this: I love my children. So very much.
And each one has gone through more than they should've had to endure these past 5+ years.
But they've hung in there ...... and are continuing to move forward.
One day at a time.
I know that Jim is very, very proud of them.
As am I.
:)

You have amazing kiddos Janine - and they an amazing mama! I am quite sure Jim is beaming with pride as well!!! Safe travels this week. Can't wait to see you!!! Love you.
Janine, congratulations on raising three beautiful, talented, gifted women! I, too, am the mother of a social worker. She received her master's degree in December and moved to Juneau, Alaska. I hope your daughter doesn't move so far away. I miss her but she is having the adventure of a lifetime. Raising an independent child was our number one goal. This next year should be a great adventure for all of you! Enjoy!
Congrats to all 3 of your daughters and to you too! You did a great job, obviously! And I'm sure Jim is beaming with pride! Best to all of you, although not planned this way, you and 2 of them will be roommates, and it's happening for a reason. Best!
