It may be time to build .....

.... an ark.  The rain has been falling for 2 days and shows no sign of stopping.  I have quite a bit of lumber in my garage from all of the projects around here.  I'm sure I could build one big enough for at least me, Son #3, Gabby and the cats.
Stop laughing ..... I could totally do it.  IF I wanted to.  :p

No pictures tonight because at the moment I'm transferring info from one computer to another. Something that evidently takes all night.

Today was a busy day.  I went to work, then left to go pick up Gabby and take her to the vet.  She's been limping since Saturday and it's gotten worse.  She won't put any weight on her back left leg.  So back in to the vet I went.  I told them that I really liked them, but was tired of seeing them.  They agreed.
It appears that she has torn some cartilage or something else in there.  I have to keep her on pain/anti-inflammatory meds for a week.  And ..... get this .... keep her quiet.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  Keep her quiet?!!  She can't run outside and she can't run around the house ..... ummmm, chasing cats.
I'll let you know how that works out for us.  hahahahahahahaha.....
Today was the first time that I actually thought, "What have I done?!"  This was after I got her out of the car, on her leash, and was trying to get her to walk, not run, into the vet's office.
She can literally drag me wherever she wants to now.  She weighed in at 70 pounds.  I may have to start carrying a cattle prod.
I was checking out after the visit and had her calmly sitting beside me as I stood at the counter, the leash looped around one hand, my pen in the other.  I was signing my receipt just as one of the exam room doors opened and a man came out with his terrier .........
I would loved to have seen this from the receptionist's point of view.  One moment I was there, the next moment I was not, as I had just been torn from my standing position into almost a face-plant position.  Gabby saw the dog, took off like a flash and pulled me along with her 70 pounds.  Everyone thought it was hilarious.
Well, almost everyone.
Someone else thought this: "If this horse pulls something in my arm so that I can't play tennis for a while, I'm going to be extremely ticked!".
Guess who thought that?

On a more somber note (sorry) .... today I also thought this:  "Will there ever come a time when I won't think of Jim and then immediately think  ....... 'I can't believe that THIS is my life.'
Ever?"
I'm guessing probably not.  I can't allow myself to think of him for long periods of time.  I can only go there for a moment or two and then I have to move to another thought.
I'm glad that sometimes I can share these moments with you all ..... it seems to work differently if I'm sharing something about him with someone else.  It's the times when I'm alone that I can't REALLY think about him.
So thanks for reading and for commenting ..... sometimes on the blog, sometimes by e-mail, sometimes face-to-face.

By the way, Gabby slept OK in her crate last night.  Of course her crate is right next to my bed so she knows I'm right there.  And she did seem a bit surprised when I wouldn't let her climb up on the bed and told her to get into the crate.  She looked at me as if to say, "I'm sorry, Madam, but you must be mistaken.  This is my bed.  This is where I sleep.  This is where I allow YOU to sleep."
But once she was in the crate/garage, she seemed to sleep well.  I still woke up around 3:00 but I do that every night, I guess.

OK, time to get back to my "after" life.  The cats are chasing each other up the stairs, Gabby is considering chasing them while she's chasing her stuffed shark.  She throws it up and around and runs after it.
It's time to make her be "quiet".
It's going to be a very bumpy week.

P.S.  Anyone know if a good sedative to give dogs to make them "quiet" all day?!

P.P.S.  Don't forget that tomorrow is "Ask Me Wednesday".  So start asking!!

J,
Oh my - so LOL at the vet story! I can totally picture the scene, from everyone's vantage point. Seriously - we had good luck with a halter type device, so that I could walk our mere 50lb dog when I was pregnant. The original version we have is called the "Gentle Leader", but there are lots of brands out there now. Dr. O recommended it to me, and it worked like a charm. It looks like a muzzle and works pretty much the same as a halter (think horse). Apparently, it puts pressure where they don't like it whenever they try to pull on the leash. Hope this helps.

I'm glad you are able to share your stories and thoughts of Jim on this blog. We all love that we get to keep him in our thoughts, and more importantly, that it helps you to "talk" about him with your readers. I love the pics too.

Do you want a kitten? :) Apparently they found a bunch of cute strays under my kids school... I would take one but I can't afford the shots and declawing at this point. I've been wanting a new kitty for a while...

Time to go to the grocery store and buy "soup bones". I boil them in water with gravy, or any type of broth. For puppies, I usually cut all the meat off the bones. I think it might be too much on their tummies. That should keep her busy for awhile!
Actually,I have some cooling on my counter right now. They will chew these bones forever!! Later, you can stick some peanut butter inside them too. They LOVE that and it keeps them busy!
Try it!
It also wears them out...she may be ready for a "cat" nap when she is done with all that chewing. (sorry...had to say it...it just fit. ;P )

Okay...first, I have to mention an insidious little probelm that most giant breed puppies get about this age. It's called Panosteitis. It's pain caused by the rapid growing of the growth plates and limbs...and it WILL go away, but it's painful and hard to watch. She can have meds for the pain, but be careful what you give, because their livers are greatly affected by many pain-killers and anti-inflammatories. Ask your vet about it and I'm sure they can offer some relief for Gabby. (You can also look it up...there's a wealth of info out there on it.)

I too, like to give my dogs soup bones, but I NEVER cook or boil them. Bones become brittle when cooked and can severely injure a dog, so mine get only raw bones. Dogs can even eat chicken bones when completely raw! I used to only feed my Newfies a raw diet, but now I'm down to one Newf and it's just too much work!

I would hold off on another kitty until you're sure that Colby and Rigs are healthy. I have a horse you can have though! (grin) I just rescued him and he needs a home!

Love you:)

I'm still thinkin on the "Ask Me Wednesday". I was just going to comment "African" but thought I might draw it out to long and it wouldn't be funny anymore. So I'm still thinkin! Too funny about Gabby and the Vet visit. But I'm sure not so much for you. No clue on a said-a-give for the dog...sorry. Love you J! And if I haven't mentioned it lately...YOU DA BOMB!

Question: I don't remember hearing if the dizziness went away. I'm assuming that since you haven't talked about that it has.

My lab has slept with me for 12 years depending on the season. I have wood floors so in the summer she sleeps on them and in the winter she sleeps with me. It is wonderful in the summer to have the bed to myself. But I have a cat who thinks I'm his pillow. So there's always a four legged person with me. I got a pinch collar for Abby when she was younger because she pulled so hard on her leash she would choke herself, it has worked well through the years.

I love your parenting rules. I'm hoping that your sister takes some of them into consideration. I haven't been able to get her to understand that she doesn't have to do everything after all is that what people have kids for.

Thanks for sharing life.

I have a question about vomitting children. How did you keep from conracting every virus that passed through your house? Seth was sick earlier this week. I changed sheets and pajamas so many times! I did thorough hand washings every time but here I sit today...vomitting, dizzy, and aching all over.
Frank has been in the bed with me all day and is thoroughly put out when I have to get up to hurl.

Ok, J. Here's my "Ask Me Wednesday" question.....What are your thoughts on television in the kids' bedrooms? I think I know the answer to this, but just wanted to hear [read] your perspective. Keep up the great work!

Sorry, my question is for Lis...I don't have to cook the bones, even if there is some meat left on them? They can eat the meat raw and not get sick??
I don't cook them very long. They last forever, so I don't think they are getting brittle. (??)
Thanks in advance for your help.
Oh...and for J...we started feeding our dogs "Wolf Pack"...read up on it. We are having GREAT results with it so far.
Love you all.

M2K2USA,
Does the peanut butter on the bone work on 3 year old boys too! Gotta love that idea.

Bernie in VA, missing all in TX!

Bernie...if you knew J's brother...you would know why God only gave us GIRLS!
M broke the "boy mold" in their family! Whew!
Also, I think he had so many girlfriends as a teen/young adult, that God said..."you want girls?...I'll give ya girls... THREE of them...to live and deal with for the REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!
God...gotta love him!
