And So Time ......

                                                               source
...... moves forward.
Despite what we want.
Despite how we feel.
Despite who we've lost.

So it's now 2013.
Wow.
It's interesting how my concept of time has changed since Jim died.
I mean, I was always aware of how fast time seems to go.  When you've got children you're more than aware of that.
But back then, in my "before", if someone asked about when an event happened, and I had to figure out the year, I'd try to think how old the kids were then.  Or how many we had.  My children were always the ruler for how I measured time.

But in the last 5 years, here in my "after", if I have to figure out a year ...... I first have to remember if Jim was alive ...... or dead, when an event occurred.
And for some reason, that's getting harder to do.  I don't know if it's due to "widda brain", or if it's because it seems like a thousand years ...... and yesterday, all at the same time.

Today Son #1 and I were watching Jeopardy and a question was asked about something that happened in 2003.  Once I knew the answer my thoughts turned to this:  "How long did Jim have left when that occurred?"
His death, and his life, are now my ruler for measuring time.
It's either, how long had Jim been dead when that happened, or how long did he have left before that night that came out of nowhere.  The night that changed my life, and my children's lives, forever.

Of course, once I figure out how many years, or months, or days we had until our world as we knew it ended, I then wonder what, if anything, we would've done differently ...... had we known.

I haven't come up with a firm answer ......  yet.
Of course we would've spent more time together as a family, but would things have changed drastically?  Some widowed people, many of you who are reading this now, had a certain amount of knowledge, or estimations, on how long you had left.  Did that cause the two of you to change things in your lives?

We had no knowledge, nor forewarning ...... no matter how much we should've had.  So I can only speculate.  I can only guess.
My first thought is that Jim would've quit his job and all 8 of us would have traveled together, spent time doing exactly what we wanted, or maybe have moved somewhere tranquil and beautiful all by ourselves.
And then I come to my senses and know, with certainty, that had we done that, we (ironically) would've killed each other.
Because families can stand only so much "togetherness" all by themselves ...... before someone breaks. And goes off on someone else.
Really, it's only a matter of time.
Time.

If we had decided to run away from it all to a place of beauty and tranquility, we would've had to take 2 of our daughters out of college and all three sons out of school (Son #1 was in his senior year when Jim died).
I think that, though the kids would've appreciated that thought, they would also have been a bit tense about the thought of interrupting their educations.  Well, all except for the youngest two (Sons 2 & 3), who would've been overjoyed at leaving school behind, with the thought to never return again.

And then I also realize that Jim made a good living.  Good enough to pay our bills, own our home, and send our kids to college.
But if he had quit his job to just hang out with us, it wouldn't have been long before we'd all been hanging out under a bridge somewhere.  I think tranquility and beauty can get pretty expensive.  Especially for 8 people.

So, had we known, I have no idea what we would've done, if anything to change our lives.
Years ago, Oprah asked a question of her studio audience:  "If you only had 2 weeks to live, what would you do?"
One man stood up and said, "I'd have my mother-in-law move in with us, because she can make two weeks seem to last forever."
Which of course is hilarious ...... and yet something to ponder.
If you had the chance to change your lives, knowing that your spouse would die in _____ (fill in the blank), would you try to live normally, or change things up so much that time would seem to last forever (meaning you, or someone, would be miserable)?

Time moves forward.
And while it takes us a while to get used to that, in our "after", and that we many times have no control over what we are handed, we sometimes do have the ability to make the most of it.  While it's here.
It took me a long while to be able to do that, to grasp it.
I knew it, but I couldn't do it.
Neither can many of you.
But the day will come ...... that you will.
You will not only know it, but desire it.  You'll want to make the most of what you have.
And that's exactly what your loved one would've wanted.
As you would want for him/her if the person who died had been you.

That day will come.
You may not believe that today.
That's ok.
Just try not to get upset when I say, "I told you so."
:)

Happy Wednesday, Peeps.

Today is Widowed Blog Hop Day!

It's Blog Hop Wednesday ......

Wednesday night update to Blog Hop list:  a couple of the blogs/authors were mixed up.  Please see the bold font at the bottom of the list to know which 2 have been corrected.
Thanks.  :)

...... which probably means absolutely nothing to most of you.
Except that you're wondering if you have to dance to an Elvis song.
Or the Big Bopper.
If you even know who the Big Bopper was.
(And just as an aside, just so you know ..... he was before my time but my mother did a great job of educating me in "oldies" music.  As I did for my children.  Much to their chagrin.)

So anywhoo ..... back to the topic at hand.  This is a Blog Hop.
Actually, it's a Widowed Blog Hop, to be more specific.
Which means that at the end of my post there will be a list of other blogs ...... written by widowed people who are participating in the Blog Hop.

The hope is that you will "hop" from one blog to the next, thus meeting new writers and maybe making new friends.
We'll be doing this every month ..... on the first Wednesday of each month.

So welcome to the start of something new.
And I hope you enjoy hopping around.
Let me know what you think about it.

And now, back to my regularly scheduled post for today.

"Small Words ......"

............ can add up to one powerful sentence.
Or two.

Monday I went to lunch with several friends.  We decided on Chinese.  The food was good.  The company was better.
At the end of the meal came the traditional passing around of the fortune cookies.  We always open our cookies and then take turns reading the "fortune" out loud to the others.
This time there was one difference:  I didn't read mine and no one seemed to notice, for which I was glad.

It was a simple strip of paper.  With ten simple words.
Those ten words made two very powerful sentences:

I was stunned when I read those words.
And suddenly felt overwhelmed.
But in a good way.

And that surprised me.

If I had read those words in the first two years of my "after", I most likely would've felt stunned, overwhelmed and very, very grieved.
I could not have dealt with the thought that my happiness was not behind me.
Because behind me is where Jim is.
As is the happiness we had.
And that was all the happiness I would ever have.
Or so I thought.

But I was wrong.
Back then ...... so fresh in my "after".
And, even if it hurts to read this ...... so are you, if you think that all of your happiness is behind you.
I'd like for those words to give you hope, and not hurt.
But in the beginning ..... which lasts as long as it lasts for each person ...... just about everything hurts.

Even ten small words.

But now ...... now at almost 5 years in my "after", those ten words made me smile ..... not cry.
They reinforced the hope that has been planted in my heart.
Yes, they are only words.
No, I don't truly believe that fortune cookies hold the truth to my future ...... or anyone else's.

But I do believe in the power of those words.
And I believe there's a reason that they were in the cookie that I opened ...... and not in the eight others that were opened.

But what's more important, at least to me, is that that little slip of paper was powerful ...... but only partly true.
I do have happiness behind me.
And I treasure it.

But I also believe that I have much happiness before me.  I don't know what that looks like, but I do know that it's my choice.  If I choose to spend all of my time looking behind me, I'll miss out on all that is before me.
That doesn't mean that in order to be happy I have to stop looking behind me completely.  I don't.
I know that I can glance behind me, and yet stretch my hands out in front ..... to catch hold of the happiness that's there.
I can remember what I had, and yet look forward to what is yet to come ...... whatever that is.
I don't have to forget Jim ...... that's just physically impossible.  He's part of me, and will always be.
But I can take him forward with me ....... because he helped make the woman I am today.  And the woman I'll be tomorrow.

I am happy.
Now.
Where I am.

And I'll be happy in the future.
Because of the happiness and love I had in the past.
I know what's possible.

And I know that ten little words can pack a lot of power.
If I choose to believe them.

And I do.

Happy Wednesday, Peeps.
:)

And speaking of Wednesday, here's the list of the other blogs ...... from which you may hop.  :)

Another Fun Weekend ......

...... spent in Oklahoma.

My Cowboys played well again.  Of course, they didn't really play a very strong team so it doesn't seem to count as much as it should.
They don't play next weekend so hopefully they'll get a lot of practice time in before they play Texas in two weeks.
In Stillwater.
And yes, Son #3 and I will be there.
Whoop!
(I hope.)

It was pretty cool in Tulsa when we arrived Friday evening.  Son #3 and I thought it felt wonderful.  People were wearing sweatshirts and jackets.  We certainly weren't, but people were.
Weenie people.
:)

It was raining a lot on Friday but then it stopped on Saturday for the game.  Thankfully.
I got to see several of my sorority sisters and their husbands.  It was great to see them.  And so much fun to be around.  :)

I also got to see and meet Coleman Scott, who went to OSU and won a bronze medal this summer in London.  Yep, in the Olympics!  One of my sorority sisters knows him so he and his wife (and darling 1 year old daughter) stopped by her tailgate party.  He's cute and very nice.  :)

Today Son #3 and I went over to my brother's house and surprised my Dad, who's birthday was Thursday.  We had a great time hanging out with them and having dinner at Carraba's.

My Dad got himself this for his birthday:

He's pretty proud of it.  And no, it's not the pile of trash bags on the corner.

This is Son #3 putting his luggage underneath.  Kind of like on a bus.  But not really.  :)

This is my brother checking out the tv.  Yes, while my dad was driving.  We're nothing if not totally safety conscious.  Well, some of us.

These are my 2 lovely nieces who were just about as embarrassed as Son #3 to be riding in this thing to a restaurant, a Wal-Mart, and the airport.  Teenagers!  Sigh .....      :)

And this is a really cute camper that Vicki and I saw last night driving home from Stillwater.  I would've loved to see inside it.

So there you go.  My weekend.
SO exciting, is it not?

I know.  Not really.
But trust me, excitement isn't all it's cracked up to be.
And you're the one who came here to read it.

I'll try to be more entertaining next time.
:)

Happy Sunday/Monday, Peeps.

What Goes Around ......

...... comes around.

Or at least that's what five of my kids will say ...... when they learn about this.
Sigh.

Our children got a few things from both Jim and me.
Some good things.  Some ..... not so good.

Six children inherited my eye sight.
And thus six wear contacts.

Five out of eight of our children ......  Ha!  OK, who among you stopped at that?  Who thought, "Eight?!  WTH?  Eight?!!"
That was just to see if you were paying attention.
I do not have eight children.
Wait ..............  ok, I'm OK.  I thought for a moment that I was going to hurl.
Whew!

OK, back to business.
Six.
Ahhh, yes.  Five of the six children inherited Jim's teeth.
Poor things.
Five of the six have done braces.  And two of them had them twice.
Plus those "spacers" that go in the roof of their mouth and have a little torture device key,  that you put in the spacer and then turn, so that the spacer grows a bit wider.  With every turn of the key.  I hated that key.
I felt like a guard at Guantanomo Bay.  KInd of.

All five have very pretty, straight teeth now.
Thanks to their wonderful orthodontist.
And to their mother.
Who turned the key.

Anyway, I'm sure they'll all be quite gleeful to hear ...... that I may need braces.
OMG, yes, you read that right.
And yes, I am 52.
Fifty two and braces?
Really?!
That is SO way past cute ..... or even normal.

So here's my problem.
I have straight teeth.  I've always had straight teeth.  Not sure which side I can attribute that to, but I'm grateful.  I saw what my children went through ...... .

I never gave my teeth much thought.  I mean, I take care of them.  I brush and floss.
OK, I floss regularly when my dental appointment is coming up in a week.
So at least I'm doing that.

And then a few months ago I started biting my tongue.
And my check.
And the inside of my lips and checks.
Not just once, but over and over and over again.  Almost every time I eat something.
And it's getting old.

And I wondered if I was going crazy.
Every day.  Several times a day.
I was just getting ready to call our orthodontist (the kids' orthodontia) last week, when I realized that I had a dental appointment today.  Good timing.  :)

It seems that I am as "beautiful inside as well as outside".
That's a direct quote.
From my dentist.
Who then told me that I need to make an appointment with an orthodontist.  Who still owes me for all of the vacations and American Girl dolls my family provided to his ...... through orthodontics.  :)
So I'll be going the first week of October, unless they have a cancellation before them.

It seems that my bite has changed.
Of course it has.

So there you go.
That's the absolute end of things I have to tell you.

Except for this:  I'm going back to Kenya in November.  I haven't been since .... well, you probably know since when.
At first I wasn't that enthusiastic.  But I am now.  It's time.

So now I think you know everything that I know.
Mostly.
Or maybe, minutely.

Whatever.
Have a great rest of your week!

:)

It's Been a Good Week ......

...... relatively speaking.

I'm trying to think of what I accomplished this week.   Ummmmmm ......

.... I interviewed/hired a new accountant.  Which required me to drive to the other side of Houston, which I did, successfully ..... and on time.
Huge.

I had to fire my previous accountant.  Things seemed to be going along swimmingly, which is to say that they seemed to be doing their job without bothering me.  I am the easiest client ever.  I don't want to attend meetings, I don't want to answer phone calls, and I don't want to be bothered with silly questions that can be taken care of without my input.
So.
Very.
Easy.

As long as I can trust you.

I received a nasty letter from the IRS several months ago.  Well, actually ...... I didn't, but Daughter #2 did.  But it came to my house.  So I opened it, as I open any important looking mail for any of the kids.
It was not a nice letter.
They told D#2 that she had not submitted her 2010 tax form.  And that she'd better submit it ASAP or she would receive the full brunt of the IRS' anger and retribution.
OK, it didn't really say that in so many words ..... but it did imply that.  And threatened fines, jail time and expulsion to Antarctica.
OK I made up that last one.
But I wouldn't put it past them.

I thought, "What a load of crap." because I knew that those tax forms had been done and sent in.  So I tossed said letter.

Then a couple of months later, another one came in the mail.  Saying pretty much the same thing, but adding that water boarding would not be far off if that damn 2010 form wasn't sent in.
Or not.

At that point I thought, "Hmmmmmm.  I wonder what's going on?  Maybe I should contact the accountant."
But I didn't.
And a couple of days letter, 3 more letters came from the IRS.  On the same day.
But they were sent to Daughter #3, Son #2 and Son #3.
And I wondered, "What the hell?"

So I called my "money guy", who happens to be a good friend and takes care of things that I really don't understand and don't care to expend energy understanding.
He then contacted my accountant (whom he had suggested hiring).
And this is what he learned:
The accountant submitted my, and my six children's, tax forms to the IRS electronically.  As many accountants do now.
Only the IRS decided to kick them back.  And they did.
But, for whatever reason, that's where my tax forms ended.  Kicked out.  Dumped.  Forgotten.
But not by the IRS.
Oh, no.  They don't forget a thing.  Unless it's owing someone money.  That they forget pretty damn quick.

So .... no one thought about my taxes until my "money guy" called to ask what had happened.
Oops.
So yeah ...... my 2010 returns were then submitted post haste.  But through snail mail.  And I wrote several checks.
But I did not pay the penalty fees ....... or the accountant.
They did my 2010 taxes (a second time) for free.
And ...... my 2011.
I think.

Now, being the easiest client on earth is a title that I hold dear.  I didn't call this accountant and complain.  I didn't say a word.  But I was told that he would call ...... and would say several words.
In a groveling kind of way.
As well he should.

I would then forgive and forget and go on my merry way and know that this kind of thing would never happen again.
But ...... he never called.
He never apologized.
He never said, "Oops."

And so I fired him.

It takes a lot for me to fire someone.  Really.  A lot.
But he should've had the equipment needed to pick up the phone and say, "I goofed ...... and I'm very sorry."
And all would've been right with the world.
Well, kind of.

But he didn't.
And so I moved on.
And hired a new guy.

So ...... if for some reason I end up being on the news because I'm being sent to a federal prison ...... you'll all know that it was not my fault.

And before I go, I'll be sure to post the name and address of the man who did not do his job.
So that he can be "Peeped" for the rest of his life.
Whatever that means.
I'm sure that you all can figure that out ....... while I'm in the clinker.
The big house.
The rock (once a slang term for Alcatraz but later used for any prison).
The farm.
The pen.
Stir.
Up river.
The joint.
The slammer.
The icebox.

I think you get the picture.
I think you got the picture several lines up.
But I was on a roll.
At least in my eyes.

Well, that was a long one item accomplishment.

I also unpacked; did laundry; grocery shopped; ordered and picked up prescriptions (which is a bigger job that you think it is); hosted Circle; went to 4 movies in one day (yes, I'm going to gloss right over that one); got addicted to a new TV show (thanks to Son #3 and the HBO hit, "The Newsroom"); went to tennis drills in 134 degree heat (or close to it);  got acupunctured; cleaned out two closets (a bigger job that you think it is ..... again); paid bills (without crying); wrote 3 blog posts; trimmed three huge trees with a 10 foot pole and a saw blade on the end; got a humongus blister on my finger because of said tree trimming (which popped before I stopped to take a look at it);  made three piles of tree limbs that were as tall, or taller, than I am;  cut up said tree limbs and put them all into three large trash cans/bins (that's a shout out to my English Peeps  :);  watched the US Open when I remembered that it was on (which is a bigger job than you think it is);  Skyped with my kids; went to a movie with Son #3; and went to a surprise birthday party.

I'm exhausted.
And am hoping that I somehow managed to avoid getting the West Nile Virus in my own backyard.
It's a lot of work to live in Texas.
And survive.

I can no longer remember what I thought I'd write in this post when I started.  But I know that it wasn't supposed to be a post about hiring an accountant.
Or firing one.
Dang.
Getting old sucks.
Or maybe it's the pernicious anemia.
I also did a lot of research this week.

Oh ...... and here's the kicker ...... I managed to stay gluten-free for a 4th week.
No, I haven't written about this before.
I didn't want to talk about it.
It's boring.  And can be obnoxious.
As well as depressing.

It hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be ...... for me, a person who loves carbs and salt.
A lot.
But I've done pretty well.
On the advice of my acupuncturist.  She thinks that the rheumatoid arthritis (or whatever the hell it is that's giving me almost constant pain in my toes and fingers, and now wrists and feet) is being caused by something I'm eating.
Since I quit taking the chemo-drug and fired my rhuematologist, I'm willing to try almost anything (note the key word here:  almost) to get rid of this pain.
I think it may be a wee bit better.
But it's hard to tell at this point.

If gluten affected my gut and intestinal tract, I'd be able to tell a difference pretty quickly.  But with inflammation and autoimmune problems .... it takes longer.
I really hope it's the gluten.
Because I can totally control that ...... and am willing to do that.

We shall see.

OK, that's it.
Yes, I know that you're glad.
You have other things to do with your time.
Like go to the bathroom ...... or watch paint dry.

Have a great last day of your weekend, Peeps.
:)

I've Had a Better Weekend .....

.... than I've had in a very long time.

That's because I stayed busy.

And because I was able to spend time with Son #3.

I had a meeting Friday night.
And another one yesterday from 8:30am - 12:00pm.
I had planned to go out last night, but I stayed home with my son.
He grilled for me.
:)
Today I went to church and helped out with the children's class.  It was fun.  I spent most of the hour tying long, thin balloons so that a "magic guy" could make balloon animals for all of the kids.  We blew up over 200 balloons.  I think.
My thumb was sore and red when we were done.
But it was great to watch the kids' faces during that hour.
They had a blast.
And did all of the adults.
:)

I have another meeting tonight (Son #3 has been at work all day and gets off tonight).
After that it will be time for my weekly Skype group call with my kids.  :)

Not a bad weekend at all.

Happy Sunday, Peeps.
:)

Stepping Out ....

.... and not too sure where I'll land.
Or if I'll crash.

Or really .... if I'll actually, really take that step.

I joined eHarmony.

And now I feel so .... unsure about it.

I tried before.  A couple of years ago.  But I never made it past the first stage.  Every time a "match" wanted to communicate, I backed off .... I closed the "match", which is a nice way of saying I didn't even let the guy get out of the box.  I ended something that really wasn't "something" because it never stood a chance.  Kind of like every guy I "dated" in college.  Until I met Jim.
I wasn't ready.

I felt ready this time.
And then the "matches" started coming.
And now my stomach is lurching.
And I'm very, very teary.

I am so tired of feeling teary,
Of crying.
Of ..... missing someone that I can't have.
Of ..... wishing he were here so that I wouldn't be looking on a stupid computer for something I once had, and never thought I'd lose.  At least .... not before the age of 90.

Life is full of .... surprises.
Sometimes too full.

I went to church tonight (we have worship services on Sundays and then the same service on the following Wednesday in the summer.  It's nice to able to go on Wednesdays if you were out of town or .... maybe, slept in, on Sunday).  We took prayer requests.  One woman requested prayer for the family of a woman who has lived a long life and will soon leave this world.  She was described as being ready to go, happy to be going where she knows she's going.
And I thought ..... "Yay for her."
Really.
I am happy for that woman.
And a bit .... jealous, I suppose.
I could also feel myself in her place .... being ready, and happy to be going.

Because that's how I feel now.
How I've felt since that horrible, horrible night.

No, I no longer want to rush and get there quickly by doing something to myself.
Nor do I wish for something final to happen to me, like say .... a bus slamming into me as I walk down a sidewalk.
I used to.
Oh, how I used to.
But so did every other widow in my Circle.
So I knew that I was not alone .... or crazy.
Only .... widowed.
Way too soon.

I'm not depressed to be here.
I am living and loving and finding joy.
Most of the time.

But I still feel that, when the time comes for me to leave this world and walk into the next one .... I will not be walking.
I will be flying.
And oh, so happy.
Beyond happy.
Joyful.

And really, I think that's great.

Because I don't just feel that way on "teary" days.
I feel it on good days.
Great days.

So back to where I rambled from .....
I feel teary.
Heck, I am teary.
I miss him.
Still.
Very much.
As ever.
Still.

And I'm sure my aching joints are not helping in any way, but are contributing to the teariness.
And the missing of him.

As is the search for someone new.
Someone nice.
Someone to spend a little time with.
Not a lot.
Just .... enough.

Someone to laugh with.
Someone to be with.
Someone to hold my hand.

But I guess the question is .... do I want that enough?
Or do I just sit and wait for Mr. Wonderful to just walk into my life all on his own?
Ummmmmm, that doesn't seem to be working, by the way.
So I decided to move forward .... to actually, make a move.

And now?
Now, I'm less sure.
But not so much that I'll quit.
Not yet.

I think, way down deep .... I want to at least open the box.

Happy Wednesday/Thursday, Peeps.
:)

Life Is ....

..... good.
Mostly.

In fact, today I not only thought that, I bought the t-shirt.

Yep.
Seriously.
Which is the t-shirt I was wearing when I bought the new one.

I know that since December 18th of 2007, I have mostly felt .... and asked, "Seriously?!"
Many times.
Many, many times.
Too many to count.

But today, even though I wore that shirt, I thought that my life is mostly good.
My joints still hurt, but I am not flaring.
Not now anyway.
Hopefully not again, but I've learned to not look too far ahead and to be happy with right now.

I took my last steroid pill on Friday.
We shall see.
I also am trying, WITH my doctor's consent, to see if the statin I've been taking for a year has anything to do with the joint pain.
Thankfully statins are not something you have to wean yourself off of.
So the last one I took was last Wednesday.
So far I have not noticed a difference, but time will tell.  I hope.

My shoulder is great.
So great, in fact, that I played tennis yesterday.
I KNOW!!
It felt .... absolutely great.
For the first time in 5 or so years I played tennis with no pain in my shoulder.
None.
Zero.
Zilch.

I only played for an hour or so, since my team mates didn't want me to push it.
Dad-gummit.
It felt so good to be out on the courts again.
And to be with my friends.
: )

Then I came home and started working on stuff for Camp Widow, and continued organizing all around the house.
I managed to clean out and organize the game room and the laundry room.
It took me until 5:00 A.M. ---- yes, as in THE MORNING, but I got it done.
I had to stop at 8:30 last night for our monthly board meeting (we Skype them since we're all over the U.S.).  We finished the meeting around 10:30 p.m.   I then finished up some work for that and then went back to the organizing.
Yes, I should have gone to bed, but I didn't feel tired.  Or sleepy.
And so I organized.
And am very happy with the results.
Even if I'm not happy with the lack of sleep.
:)

I got up at 10:00 and then ran errands until 3:30.
Both boys are home.
The grocery store takes longer than I remembered it taking at the beginning of the summer.
After that I went back to work on CW stuff.
It's in 3 weeks.
I.  Can.  Not.  Wait!
I SO look forward to seeing very good friends again .... and meeting other very good friends face-to-face, for the first time.
And just in case you doubt .... it's TOTALLY and 100% possible to develop a very, very good friend without even meeting them.
That's what widowed people do.
And I have found that ability to be very amazing.

I also get to spend time with Jim's brother and his family in San Diego that week .... and of course I'm looking forward to that.
I love spending time with them.  I wish we could see each other more often.
But .... there you go.
So I enjoy the time when I have it.

And speaking of someone I love ......
My sister sent me this today:

She painted it herself.
I KNOW!!!
I love it!!
And her.
:)
And in case you're wondering, the sign behind the glass reads, "Real love stories never have endings ..."
Someone special gave it to me after Jim died.
I love it, too.
:)

So there ya go .... my past day or so.
And now you'll have to excuse me.
I'm being crafty.  Literally.
I KNOW!!!!
That is SO not me, and I am currently understanding why.
I'm trying to turn a piece of "wood" (not real wood but I don't know exactly what it is.  See how crafty I am NOT?) into a magnetic chalkboard.
I have sprayed an entire can of magnetic paint on it.
I am less than thrilled with it's power to attract.
Way less.

But I've used up the whole can and I have no intention of getting another one, so .....
it's time to use up the chalkboard paint.
Which will most likely lead me back to my starting point .... an unmagnetized chalkboard.
What. Ev. Er.

Wait ..... it just occurred to me .....
It just may be .... that life is good ......
Because I'm spraying cans of flammable,  mood-altering vapors in my family room.
All by myself.
Well, me and the cat.
But his mood seems to be unaltered.
Always.

But mine?  It's pretty dang good.
I'd better start spraying again before it alters.
:)

Happy Tuesday/Wednesday, Peeps.

Things That Made Me Cry .....

.... like this picture of Jim .... no longer make me cry.
Well, the majority of the time.
There are always "one of those days/weeks", but they are few and far between now.
Mostly.

This realization occurred to me this past weekend.  I was looking for a tote bag to use for my swim suit and towel and various other Fourth of July sundries.  I happened to choose the first one I saw.
It was a bag that Jim purchased on our last vacation.
The vacation we took with the boys to Alaska.
Not knowing, of course, that it would be .... our last.

So, I grabbed the tote, threw my stuff into it ... and then felt something in the inside pocket.  I wondered what could be in there and when I had last used it as I unzipped the pocket and looked inside.

And I discovered that I had not been the last one to use that tote.

I pulled out the items that Jim had left in the pocket and stared at them for a moment.
A highlighter, a couple of paper clips, a pen and some small stick-it notes that are used to note something on a page.

Just a few things .... things that would mean nothing to most people.
But I knew that Jim used to take reading materials with him almost everywhere we went.
He could usually be found sitting somewhere (even on a beach) with a stack of papers in one hand, a highlighter in the other, and a pen clenched in his teeth as he marked sections on a page.

And the picture of him doing just that entered my mind as I stared at those objects.

And I smiled.

It was shortly after that when I realized ..... the things that used to have the power to make me cry, to bring forth gut-wrenching pain and huge sobs of grief .....

.... now have the power to make me smile.

A Double Edged Sword ....

.... is something I should be used to by now.
I'm not.

I am in Alaska this week.
This is my second visit.
The first time was back in 2007 .... with Jim and the Sons.

It was to be our last family vacation.
Ever.
Jim died 6 months later.

My brother lives here and I came to be his "nurse" after he has back surgery today.
(I'm not sure why anyone would consider me to be a good care-giver .... I left home with one of the Sons sounding like he's hacking up a lung).

Anyway, being here .... walking through this home, taking my suitcase into the same bedroom we used ..... is a double-edged sword.
It's piercing my heart with the missing of Jim and yet making me grateful to have one-on-one time with my brother, which we've probably never had before.

The above picture is one of my favorites of Jim ..... as well as one of the last.
He loved Alaska.
He loved my brother and his family.
He loved how beautiful it is here (in the summer .... not so much right now) and was enjoying the view from a mountain that we were in the midst of climbing that day .... our last day here.

I wonder ..... do the "firsts" ever stop coming?
Do reminders of the "lasts" ever stop coming?
Because after 3 1/2  years ..... I'd like them to stop.
But I don't think they will.

I still have marriages ahead of me.
Daughters with no father to walk them down the aisle.
Sons with no dad to give them sage advice before their wedding day.

I, hopefully, still have grandchildren to be born.
Beautiful children who will never know the wonderful man who was their grandfather.

I still have graduations to go through ..... and one Marine boot camp graduation.
That one would have made Jim cry like a baby.
I know that I'll be crying for both of us.

All of these "firsts" are double-edged swords .... they will bring heart ache .... and joy.

I am happy again.
But it's a happiness that is many times tinged with sadness around the edges.

I'm happy to be here with my brother.
I'm grateful that I could make the time to come and help him out.

But I'm sad that these walls and this place are also reminders of one of our "lasts".

Happy.
Sad.
Firsts.
Lasts.

Life is full of double edged swords.

Borrowing ....

.... a quote that Taryn put on Widow's Voice today .....

When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. It means that if we meet again, you will know me. It means that even after I die, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.

I can still see his face and hear his voice.

And I still speak to him.
Out loud as well as in my heart.

Happy, but missing him so much in my happiness.

And yes, the missing of him ..... the fact that I have a reason to miss him .....

.... still sucks.

Later, Peeps.
