Today I'm Sharing ......

... what Ann Voskamp wrote on her blog this afternoon.

Because she says it better than I can.

And because we all need to be reminded.

These are her words ...... her message.  But it's even more beautiful on her blog.

What Christians Need to Know about Mental Health

Dear Church,
Cancer can be deadly and so can depression.
So can the dark and the shame and the crush of a thousand skeletons, a thousand millstones, a thousand internal infernos.
We could tell you what we know.
That — depression is like a room engulfed in flames and you can’t breathe for the sooty smoke smothering you limp — and suicide is deciding there is no way but to  jump straight out of the burning building.
That when the unseen scorch on the inside finally sears intolerably hot –  you think a desperate lunge from the flames and the land of the living seems the lesser of two unbearables.
That’s what you’re thinking — that if you’d do yourself in, you’d be doing everyone a favor.
I had planned mine for a Friday.
That come that Friday the flames would be licking right up the the strain of my throat. You don’t try to kill yourself because death’s appealing — but because life’s agonizing. We don’t want to die. But we can’t stand to be devoured.
So I made this plan. And I wrote this note.
And I remember the wild agony of no way out and how the stars looked, endless and forever, and your mind can feel like it’s burning up at all the edges and there’s never going to be any way to stop the flame. Don’t bother telling us not to jump unless you’ve felt the heat, unless you bear the scars of the singe.
Don’t only turn up the praise songs but turn to Lamentations and Job and be a place of lament and tenderly unveil the God who does just that — who wears the scars of the singe. A God who bares His scars and reaches through the fire to grab us, “Come — Escape into Me.”
Nobody had told me that –
that one of the ways to get strong again is to set the words free.
You know — The Word that bends close and breathes warming love into the universe…. and the words mangled around swollen secrets and strangling dark — just let the Word, the words, all free in you.
My Dad, he had told me that if I told, it’d slit us all.
So much for believing the Truth will set you free. So much weight for a wide-eyed nine-year-old.
So I locked lips and heart hard so no one knew about the locked wards and the psychiatric doctors and why my mama was gone and it’s crazy how the stigma around mental health can drive you right insane.
There are some who take communion and anti-depressants and there are those  who think both are a crutch.
Come in close — I’d rather walk tall with a crutch than crawl around insisting like a proud and bloody fool that I didn’t need one.
I once heard a pastor tell the whole congregation that he had lived next to the loonie bin and I looked at the floor when everyone laughed and they didn’t know how I loved my mama. I looked to the floor when when they laughed, when I wanted them to stand up and reach through the pain of the flames and say:
Our Bible says Jesus said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick.” Jesus came for the sick, not for the smug. Jesus came as doctor and He makes miracles happen through medicine and when the church isn’t for the suffering, then the Church isn’t for Christ.
I wanted them to say it all together, like one Body, for us to say it all together to each other because there’s not one of us who hasn’t lost something, who doesn’t fear something, who doesn’t ache with something. I wanted us to turn to the hurting, to each other, and promise it till we’re hoarse:
We won’t give you some cliche –  but something to cling to — and that will mean our hands.
We won’t give you some platitudes — but someplace for your pain — and that will mean our time.
We won’t give you some excuses — but we’ll be some example — and that will mean bending down and washing your wounds. Wounds that we don’t understand, wounds that keep festering, that don’t heal, that down right stink — wounds that can never make us turn away.
Because we are the Body of the Wounded Healer and we are the people who believe the impossible— that wounds can be openings to the beauty in us.
We’re the people who say: there’s no shame saying that your heart and head are broken because there’s a Doctor in the house. It’s the wisest and the bravest who cry for help when lost.
There’s no stigma in saying you’re sick because there’s a wounded Healer who uses nails to buy freedom and crosses to resurrect hope and medicine to make miracles.
There’s no guilt in mental illness because depression is a kind of cancer that attacks the mind. You don’t shame cancer, you treat cancer. You don’t treat those with hurting insides as less than. You get them the most treatment.
I wanted the brave to speak Truth and Love:
Shame is a bully and Grace is a shield.  You are safe here.
To write it on walls and arms and wounds:
No Shame.
No Fear.
No Hiding.
Always safe for the suffering here.
You can be different and you can struggle and you can wrestle and you can hurt and we will be here.Because a fallen world keeps falling apart and even though we the Body can’t make things turn out — we can turn up. Just keep turning up, showing up, looking up.
Mama came Home and I found grace, a thousand, endless graces, and it is by grace we are saved, grace adopting us into a family that no illness can ever remove us from.
Grace, that miracle which even the darkest can’t consume, but only consumes you.
Light pried through the dark. A shaft came through a window like a lifeline. And the birds sang and we heard them.

Thank you ....

.... to each of you who came out (some out of lurkdom) to post helpful suggestions and tons of support.
I really, really needed that.
Last night was a bad night.
A very bad night.

I struggled to stay up until 8:00 or so before going back to bed.
Those 3 - 4 hours were very dark.
I hate the dark.

I think that my body is now telling me that it's time to rest.  I've been going and going and going, trying to not think about what I may, or may not, have going on inside of me.
I know that part of having R.A. is needing to rest .... a lot.
And I am not good at resting.
And I abhor the thought of "having to rest" .... especially on a regular basis.  It makes me feel like I'm 105 or quite sickly .... and I'm neither.

But yesterday my body took control of my mind and would not let me intercede.  I could not control it for one more hour.
And that was very, very depressing.

This was not how I saw my life going.
Even after Jim's death.
I am sick and tired of the things that seem to have been thrown at me since then, because I guess that having my husband die was just not enough.

So, today I feel better.  I made it, barely, to my 9:00 PT appointment.  I didn't want to, but I did.
Then I got a couple of things done around the house.
And now I am ready for another nap.

On the up side .... I think that the steroids are starting to help.
On the down side ..... that means that I definitely have this disease.
And that sucks.
And is depressing.

Because it's hard enough to be 51 and have the hope of ever meeting another man who will love me hugely, but to have to add to the baggage of RA in there ...... that hope seems to be dying.

Yes, I know that there are some great meds out there, so that gives me hope.
And I know my doctor won't keep me on the steroids for very long.  He just wanted to do this for 2 weeks as a test to see if they have any effect.  Because if they do then that will tell him that the disease is there, even if I tested false negative, as some of the population does.
Only 2% of the people out there get this disease.
How.
Did.
I.
Get.
To.
Be.
So.
Lucky?

OK, enough of this pity party post.  I hate these, which is why I rarely tell anyone what's really going on.
I am SO sick of things "going on" and being the person that other people feel sorry for.  I am not that person .... I don't like it and I don't handle it well.  So when I finally break down and say that I'm not feeling well, it's because it's been going on so long that I have to finally let it out.

Now I will end this on the UP, UP, UP side.
I asked the dr., "If it turns out that I do have RA, what kind of exercise can I do?  Can I still play tennis?"
He said, "Certainly.  I know it's important to you since you've already mentioned it 3 times and yes you'll be able to play.  You won't be able to play if you're having a flare up (like right now) because it's not good on your joints to play when they're swollen.  But yes, you can play.  I play tennis also and know how much it means to you.  So that's my job .... to get you back on the courts."
I think I almost fell in love with him at that moment.
And I tried very hard to not cry in front of him .... again.
:)

So there you go, Peeps.
My life today.
Could be worse.
Could be better.

It is what it is.

Happy Wednesday, Peeps.
:)

I Was Totally Wrong ....

.... about not being any more exhausted than I was yesterday.

Way wrong.

It is now 5:20 p.m. and I just got out of bed.
I am heading back to bed as soon as I can.

I think my body is telling me that it doesn't want any more pain pills.
No, I'm not a dr. but I don't know what else could be responsible for this.
I took 2 steroid pills last night and don't think that's what this is.
I just think my body is tired.
Which makes me very sad that I made my PT appt for tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

Well, that's it.
I'm going back to bed to hopefully sleep through the night.
Being awake just seems to make me tired .... and depressed.
Yuck.

I'm Here ....

.... kind of.

I got home Tuesday night and was immediately exhausted and overwhelmed. I had 3 suitcases to unpack and lots of mail to go through. I unloaded 2 suitcases and left all of my clean clothes in a suitcase. It looked like my room and my bathroom had exploded. I do not deal well with chaos, or stuff all over my house.
Not at all.
You can ask all of my friends who helped out here when Jim died. I can remember one day (& I don't remember much of that first week) when I came out of my bedroom in a stupor (that's a given)and walked into the kitchen. The counters were covered with stuff, most likely food, lists of people who had brought meals and people who were bringing meals, messages taken from phone calls, items to get done before the memorial, etc. My brain wasn't functioning enough to realize all of that (also a given). All I knew was that my counter tops were very cluttered and I think I went a little nuts (you guessed it -- also a given). I think I announced, to no one n particular, that I had to have the counters cleared off. I cannot function when things are cluttered. Yes, I'm aware that I sound OCD. Don't judge.
I think the counters were cleared immediately .... because my loved ones love me so much .... or maybe they though I'd slash my wrists right in front of them. :)

So, back to my room and bathroom, which looked liked the suitcases had vomited up their innards. I was so tired that I just gave up, moved a pile of things over to the other side of the bed, and went to sleep. I cannot express how very, very uncharacteristic this was of me. Because it meant that I would wake up to face all of that stuff .... and I very much hate to wake up like that. Or walk into my house if it looks like that. So I got up, looked around me .... and promptly left the room, shutting the door behind me. In short, I was channeling Scarlet O'Hara.

I went into the kitchen to find Daughter #2 getting ready to leave for the summer. The day before was her birthday (& thus, Daughter #3s birthday. And being the FANTASTIC mom that I am, I forgot to call D3 and tell her Happy Birthday. That one is going into the mother-guilt vault that I (& most moms, if not all) have.
I started to fix a cup of coffee and then remembered that I was having blood drawn later and had to be fasting. Crap.

Then D2 left. Double crap.

I went to my 10:30 bleeding appointment. I then remembered that I needed to have blood drawn at a different lab for another doctor for my pre-surgery work (shoulder surgery next Fri to repair and remove a bone spur from my rotator cuff. Crap squared.) And so I did.
Triple crap.

I was hugely depressed by this time. So depressed that I cried in the car ... all the way to lab #1, hoping I could stop before I got there (I am an ugly crier and you can tell that I've been crying 30 minutes after I've stopped). Quadruple crap.

I kept telling myself,"You should be happy. You should be happy."
Nah, it didn't work.

So after the 6 test tubes of letting blood, I went back home. And sat down and tried to figure out what was wrong.

#1. I had read a blog that morning by a fellow widow and friend, announcing that she's engaged. Quintuple crap.
Not that I'm not thrilled for her ... I am. But I also wondered if I'll ever find someone to spend the rest of my life with.

#2. I miss Jim. Ad nauseum. To infinity and beyond. I wanted him here so I could tell him about my trip. So that he'd feel bad for my 6 test tubes drainage. So that he could be here for the Daughters' birthdays. And for Son #1's birthday tomorrow (his 21st). And so that he would be here with me, beaming as we watch Son #2's graduation this Saturday evening. Which also happens to be our 28th anniversary.

Then my depression made sense. Once again, my body and my emotions keep time very well, even when my brain does not. My body knows when the "important events" are coming ... and that one person, one very important person, will be absent.

In spite of my depressed state I set to work on the bathroom. And then the bedroom. It took me all stinkin' day .... because I'd get side tracked and start purging more stuff out of the closet and the cabinets and the shelves. I finally quit around 9:00 p.m., although I still wasn't done, but I had made a huge dent.

I felt better this morning, especially after reading an email from a friend who went on the cruise, telling me that she was really depressed that day. And her husband is alive and well!
I felt a bit more "normal" after that.
In fact, I felt so normal that I didn't freak about having no phone or Internet service (since yesterday afternoon, when we were promised that it would be working by 9 a.m. today).
Ummmmm ...... it's still not working.

And I didn't freak when I noticed that water was coming up from under my garage cement floor .... and soaking into the wood walls of our game room.
And that, my Peeps, is a God-thing. No, not the leak .... the fact that I wasn't getting hysterical. I just texted my "brother" and asked him what to do.
He gave me a name, I called the plumber and then waited to hear back from him telling me when he could come over.
He got here about an hour ago, saw the problem and fixd it in less than 5 minutes (clogged AC line). And then he wouldn't let me pay him. For all of my Peeps who live in my surrounding area .... his name is Scott Walters. He will always be my plumber now. :)

And now my room and bathroom are clutter-free, I'm on my third, of what appears to be six, load of laundry, and am watching Maria Sharapova getting her butt kicked by an unknown 17 year old at the French Open. I feel SO sorry for her (please know that my tongue is placed firmly in my cheek and those words are dripping with sarcasm). :)

I still miss him. I still want him back. I still wish this was all one hugely long nightmare, or that I'll awaken from a 3 and a half years long coma.
But it's not and so I continue to live. For both of us. For all 8 of us.
And continue to hope, and pray, that I might one day find that love again.

Happy Thursday, Peeps.
I'll be drawing a number tonight for the winner of my Greek gift. I know you're all just waiting breathlessly at your computers. Which means many of you need a life. :)
I'll also be working on my pictures so I can share some with you.

I thought this would be a very short post. A "I'm home but have nothing to say" post. Once again, my fingers proved me wrong.later, Peeps.
:)

P.S. I forgot to mention that after I got home Tuesday night, and ransacked my carry ons, that I lost my credit card on the plane. That's what I get for having 2 glasses of wine and then ordering a lot of crap items from the duty free catalog when I was half asleep. Sextuple crap.
I called that night to cancel the card.
And realized the next day at lab #2, when my credit card was rejected, that they had closed the wrong card. And I am now waiting for 2 new cards.
Septuple crap.

P.P.S. Please ignore the typos. It's not easy to write a novel post on a cell phone. Sigh .... the things I do for you .....
:)

P.P.P.S. Sharapova seems to be making a come back.
Octuple crap.

Weekend Pics

I am now back to the world of blogdom.  Thanks for the comments and for the answers to my question.  You all did a great job!

I am still at the lake and have no intention of going back until we have power.
"They" said that it would be back today.  Whatevah.
Now I'm hearing that it could be some time next week.
Don't get me started.

Anyway, I'm glad the weekend is over.  I have no idea when Son #2 will get a chance to see my blog again (and thus the comments).  He's on a pretty tight restriction because of his grades.  I'm SO glad it's them and not me!
And I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that he is exactly where he needs to be, no matter what he's told his friends, who now all feel incredibly sorry for him.
Funny, he was totally in control of where he ended up.  It was his decision.

So here are some pics from the weekend.  He was happier in some than others.
Obviously.

Here he is Friday night at the game .... once he calmed down and stopped yelling at me.  I could not believe how much he's changed, physically.  He's taller and has put on muscle.  He looked so much older to me!

Here he is, getting along with me!

Saturday morning, marching in the graduation parade:

Getting his graduation certificate, from his second most favorite person on earth, next to me .... his Drill Instructor (DI).  The man is very OK with being hated.  I like him very much.

Oh .... my .... gosh!!!!   This is one of the few hours that he liked me:

     The crew, minus Daughter #1:

Posing for pictures .... and, I might add, a wee bit proud of himself.  I hope that pride gets more and more common:

And this is pretty much how he looked when I left him ... only much worse.

There ya go ....  a little recap of the weekend.

Aren't you jealous that you weren't there?

P.S.  On the subject of power, or lack thereof,  I've thought of 2 more things I HUGELY miss.
Well, technically it's 3 things, but two usually count as one:  a washer/dryer and ......
I know this is really pathetic, but .... it's my vacuum cleaner.  If you've never been without power for days on end ..... you - have - no - idea.
I have a new definition of "skank" --- and it is my carpet.

Fifty two times a day

This picture is from April 2005, Jim's dad's 80th birthday.  This is his family -- his parents and his siblings.
It's a great family.

Before I get into the depressing part of this post (you've been warned -- turn back while you can.  I wish I could.) I thought I'd ask a question.  This is for all of you cat owners (or former cat owners) out there:  Is it just my cats or do they all poop FIFTY TWO TIMES A DAY??????  OK, so I exaggerate, it's really only 47.  But oh my gosh, what the heck is with that?!!!  I clean out that litter box AT LEAST 3 times a day (yes, if they poop 47 times then only 3 cleanings IS totally disgusting).  And here's the thing that tops that in their quest to drive me crazy (and no, I'm not paranoid ..... the kids have enlisted the cats in this quest!) ------ every single time I clean out that box (EVERY-SINGLE-TIME) they climb right in and poop.  EVERYSINGLETIME!!!!!
They hear me cleaning it, run in, sit and wait and almost before I can get out of the way they are in there taking a dump!!!  I know this is so crude, but I'm going nuts.  Now I clean it and just stand there with the bag and wait.  And then clean it again.
So .... is it just my "not the brightest crayons in the box" cats, or do they all do that.
Oh, and another thing --- George is losing his hair.  He has a bald spot on his head and it seems to be getting bigger.  Ever heard of that?  Does this warrant a trip to the vet?  I have warned him that if he loses all of his hair he's out of here.  I cannot have a bald cat.  Especially one named after you-know-who.  That will NOT make me smile.
Yes, my love is conditional.  Just be glad you're not one of my kids.

Now back on to the roller coaster of my life.  I may jump off of it on the next loop-de-loop.  My mother in law has continued to go down hill.  So we, as a family, spoke to her doctor on Wednesday and decided that we are going to let her go.  Which means that she will be sedated and the respirator turned off.  There were many phone calls to make and many questions to ask.  We had decided to set the date this weekend, which would give my brother in law, his family, and me time to get to Oklahoma "before".
Some have expressed disagreement with my decision to go.  But it's my decision.  I want to see her "before".  I want to talk to her and tell her how hard to hug Jim for me when she sees him.  I want to tell her that I'm so excited for her and for him.  I won't tell her how horribly jealous I am of her.  Horribly.  And then I want to be there until the "after".  I want to be with Jim's siblings and their dad.  I've done this before --- with a very good friend.  It's not the same, I know, but I want to do this.  And then I want to come home.  I do not plan to stay for the funeral.  I want to be there for her and for them and then leave.  There will be plenty of people after that.  Most of my children want to stay home .... and so they will.  Daughters #2 & #3 want to go, so we're trying to see how it works with their finals.
While we are trying to make sense of this and trying to make some kind of plans, God has thrown a kink into it (what a shock).  Last night one of her lungs collapsed.  So now we're not sure if we still have the time to "plan".  As I told someone recently, I know, better than most people, that my plans don't count for squat.  So we shall tentatively make plans, knowing that they could all blow up at any time.
I'm leaving for Oklahoma on Monday, to get in at the same time as J & L & S.  I had planned to spend Mother's Day weekend (or really, avoid it) at the lake with the kids.  But now we're staying home, closer to the airport in case I need to leave earlier.
I have no return ticket.
I also decided to take a leave of absence from work.  I need to slow down and stop being too busy to think.  It's time to think.  And I only have a month left with Daughter #1 before she heads off so I want to spend as much time as possible with her.
And I just need to rest and not feel the need to "perform" or make decisions about things or other people.
I guess I just need to "be".  And be there for my kids ..... while we're all together.
I plan on returning once everyone's back in school in August.  I hope they'll still have me.  I will miss the contact and smiles of the people with whom I work.  They are some of the best people I know and I love them.  But we tend to see less of each other over the summer anyway, so hopefully the timing is good.

Let's see .... I think that's it.  I think that's enough.  Actually, it's been more than enough for a long time now.
I wish I could be someone else for a while.  I'm not sure who.  Maybe I'll look into having one of those "out of body experiences".
I wonder if I'd find that in the yellow pages?  Or Google?
I may or may not keep you posted.
Please send up lots and lots of prayers --- for all of us.
And thank you.

A psychotic disorder

This is Jim helping Son #3 surf in Florida in 1998. That was a great vacation. Actually, they were all pretty much mostly great. Although one day I'm going to have to make a post out of all of the vacation pictures that show someone ticked off. There was usually someone at one point (or two). What would a family vacation be without a pouting family member?

I found out today that we have two, yes 2, machetes. I'm not sure if Jim thought we would one day wake up to a thicket of weeds, or have to reap wheat or corn, or if they would come in handy as some kind of defense here in the "bubble". But Son #1 says one never knows when one might have to cut something off (I asked if it could possible be an extremity but he didn't really give me a straight answer).
I think that I'm going to have to start a list that I hope to take with me when I get to move on to my next life. I used to have an "ask God" list (#1. What really happened with the whole JFK thing? #2. Fire ants???!!). Of course number one would now be bumped down -- the first thing I'd want to know is, "What the hell were You thinking?", but you already know that). Now I need to have an "Ask Jim" list. I'm sure the machetes would make the top 10.
I'll have to ponder what else I'd ask him before I write anything more about it.
I am still in a "funk". Actually, that word is too light but I'm not sure what else to call it, other than depression.
"Depression" -- what a broad term, really. Here's what Webster's says:
1 a: the angular distance of a celestial object below the horizon b: the size of an angle of depression2: an act of depressing or a state of being depressed: as a: a pressing down : lowering b (1): a state of feeling sad: dejection (2): a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies c (1): a reduction in activity, amount, quality, or force (2): a lowering of vitality or functional activity3: a depressed place or part : hollow4: low 1b
5: a period of low general economic activity marked especially by rising levels of unemployment

I'd definitely say I'm number 2 -- a, b and c. Right now I'm really feeling that "lowering of vitality". I think that's a good description. I can still laugh and smile and say funny things (most of the time). But inside -- and sometimes outside -- I feel a numbness and a definite lack of vitality. Actually, numbers 3 & 4 are pretty good, though not intentionally (hollow and low) and there is definitely low general economic activity, or really, just activity in general.
I'm not sure if people are aware of how exhausting trying to seem "normal" is.
But in the spirit of trying to seem "normal" (whatever the heck that is anymore) and to give everyone a chuckle -- here's what happened in my house tonight:
I got home from a meeting around 9:00. Son #3 was cleaning the kitchen and Son #1 was baking something in the toaster oven. He had just put on oven mitts and picked up a spatula as I walked in. I asked what he was cooking and Son #3 said "Cheesy bread."
At the same time he was answering my question Son #1 was inserting the spatula into the oven to ---- well, I'm not totally sure, but I think he thought he was going to take the loaf of bread out. What he actually did was push the loaf of bread to the back of the oven and then off of the rack (he hadn't used a baking pan), onto the heating elements, where it immediately burst into flames. Big flames. Big, toaster-oven-filling flames. He then panicked and unplugged it (thankfully he held the panic a bit under control) and then he pulled the flaming toaster oven over to the sink, where he fully intended to take the sprayer and fill the oven (did I mention it's brand-new?) with water. Fortunately I got past the open-mouthed shock and raced across the kitchen while yelling "DON'T TOUCH THE SPRAYER!!". He turned to look at me in surprise while I pushed past him and then blew out all of the flames (yes, as in a huge, old person's birthday cake). It worked and I saved my toaster oven (the new one) from being hosed, permanently.
Never a dull moment. Actually, that would be a good title for a book about my family.
I think dull moments get a bad rap. I'd enjoy a few.
